Raymon Bertram Gentry Jr.

March 29, 2011

Raymon Bertram Gentry Jr., 47, of Alexander died Saturday, March 26, 2011. He was born Feb. 11, 1964, in Little Rock to Stella and Raymon Gentry Sr. and two older sisters, Dianne Smith and Lisa Hicks.
In November 1985 he married his sweetheart, Shelia Hill of Mountain View, and was blessed with two daughters, Megan and Cara shortly afterward.

Leonard Phillip Neighbors

Leonard Phillip Neighbors, 72, of Benton passed away Sunday, March 27, 2011.
He was born March 17, 1939, in Bauxite.
Mr. Neighbors retired from AT&T, served in the National Guard and was a member of Grape Chapel Church of God. He was one of the founding father’s (Card Holder #3) of the Arkansas Rodeo Association and a Gold Card Holder in the PRCA.
Mr. Neighbors was preceded in death by his parents, Grady and Gertrude Neighbors; and an infant son.

Bauxite starts conference play with wins

Both the Bauxite baseball and softball teams are off to a 1-0 start in 4A-7 Conference play after beating Oak Grove Monday.

The Miners (8-5, 1-0) won 12-3 in seven innings behind solid pitching from junior Ryan Weng, who had a complete game with only 79 pitches.

Bauxite baseball head coach Michael Mattox said, “He worked very efficiently. It didn’t seem like he had complete command, but he’s such a competitor that even on his off days he’s effective.”

Weng gave up five hits and three runs, two of which were earned. He recorded three strikeouts with three walks.

Sheridan to face El Dorado in conference match-up

After defeating Mena 4-3 on Saturday, the Sheridan Yellowjackets will try to maintain their winning streak when they face El Dorado tonight.

“That is a big conference game for us,” Sheridan coach Mike Moore said. “They have a really good pitcher. It is going to be a tough game for us.”
The ‘Jackets are currently riding a 11-game winning streak and are 2-0 in the 6A South conference.

Sheridan scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to take a 4-2 lead over Mena last Saturday.

Fay Pauline Abbott Harris

Fay Pauline Abbott Harris, 66, of Rose City North Little Rock passed away to meet her loved ones March 25, 2011, at the Springhill Baptist Hospital in North Little Rock. Fay was formerly of the Vimy Ridge community.
She was born Sept. 14, 1944, to Woodrow and Rosa Abbott.
Fay was a member of the Vimy Ridge Immanuel Baptist Church. She helped many people with her home health care and was dearly loved by all.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Woodrow Abbott and Rosa Mullings; two brothers, Billy Abbott and Danny Mullings; and two grandchildren, Leah Galley and Robert Burchfield.

Anderson says he is ‘at home now’ with Arkansas

FAYETTEVILLE —  The last coach Arkansas hired out of the University of Missouri actively worked 50 years  for the Razorbacks  and continues  as athletics director emeritus.
At 51, Mike Anderson will be hard put to match Frank Broyles’ Razorbacks tenure though he’s willing to try.
However long he gets to coach, Arkansas’ new head basketball coach with the 17-year Arkansas assistant coaching past says he wants to coach only Arkansas.
“I’m at home now,” Anderson told the estimated 5,000 to 6,000 Saturday  packing the south side of Walton Arena. “As long as they want me here I am at home.”

Bryant has ups, downs in Tenn. tourney

After getting off to an impressive start Thursday, the Lady Hornets floundered Friday at an invitational tournament held in Tennessee.
Bryant head coach Debbie Clark said her players gathered their composure Saturday, but by the time the girls started making headway against the competition, a storm rolled through and caused officials to cancel the tournament.
Clark said other coaches were impressed by the Lady Hornets’ tenacious play during their two wins Thursday. Bryant beat Clarksville High School 6-3 and Clarskville Northwest 15-1.

Bryant wins final game of invitational

The Bryant Hornets defeated East Ridge High School (Fla.) 4-2 Friday night to win the Northwest Powerade Classic in Sanford, Fla.
The Hornets scored two runs in the second, one in the third and one in the fourth, and withstood a rally by East Ridge to complete the tournament sweep.
Landon Pickett led off the bottom of the second with a single to right field. After a strikeout, Evan Jobe singled to right field between first and second to put runners on first and second.

Championship game called in first inning

The championship game of the 2011 Central Arkansas Invitational was called Saturday due to poor field conditions.
Benton and Shiloh Christian began playing but didn't finish the first inning after three Panthers pitchers struggled get their footing.
Benton head coach Mark Balisterri stopped the game and called the umpires and Shiloh's coaches over to the mound, where everyone agreed the field's conditions were unsafe to play on.
"They couldn't get a feel at all," Balisterri said. "Their coach agreed. He said their players would've gone through the same thing.

Arkadelphia beats Glen Rose 11-1

The Beavers dropped to 6-4 on the season Friday after losing 11-1 to Arkadelphia.

Glen Rose's lone run came in the second inning when sophomore Ethan Beard came home off a sacrifice fly. He had reached base on a single and stolen second base.

Glen Rose head coach Chase Meyers said, "We just couldn't put hits together, and we left a lot of runners stranded.

"I think we left people stranded just about every inning."
He said, "And, when we did get some people on base, they'd make a couple of good plays to retire the side."
