Panthers win in extra innings

April 23, 2011

In a 6A South battle Friday night, Benton and Texarkana went into extra innings with Benton winning 3-2 thanks to a clutch two-out hit by senior Ashton Roberts.
Tied 2-2 in the top of the eighth with junior Garrison Roy on second base, Roberts hit a double to score Roy, which would prove to be the winning run after the Panthers held Texarkana scoreless in its next at bat.
Benton (17-4, 9-2 6A South) remains in first place in the conference and will host Sheridan at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Hornets beat Van Buren in game one

BRYANT — Bryant took the first game of a doubleheader Friday against Van Buren, which was postponed Thursday due to inclement weather.
The Hornets won 12-2 in six innings. The results of the second game were not available by press time.
Bryant (17-4, 7-2 7A Central) went into Friday’s game with a two-game lead in the conference.
Junior Jordan Taylor pitched all six innings for the Hornets and earned the win, allowing two runs on five hits, one walk and three strikeouts.
Head coach Kirk Bock said, “Jordan did a great job today.â€

Mary Sue Lunsford Hutcheson

Mary Sue Lunsford Hutcheson, 80, of Traskwood went to be with the Lord Wednesday, April 20, 2011.
She was born Sept. 14, 1930, in Rison to the late Dave and Mae Lunsford. She was of Pentecostal faith. Mrs. Hutcheson was employed by Benton Service Center and loved raising chickens.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Vincen Hutcheson; one great-grandson; four brothers; and two sisters.

Ronnie Arthur

Ronnie Arthur, 50, of Alexander passed away Monday, April 18, 2011.
He was born June 2, 1960, in Benton.
Ronnie was an avid hunter and fisherman. His most cherished times were spent outdoors hunting, fishing and boating on Lake Ouachita with his family and friends. He was a long-time member of Ten Mile Hunting Club in Lonsdale. Ronnie was a striper guide on Lake Ouachita for Captain Bud’s Striper Guide Service and had recently started working for CoorsTek in Benton. He was a member of Grape Chapel Church in Benton.
He was preceded in death by his step father, Herbert Keene.

Benton seniors to cheer for Hogs

April 22, 2011

Two Benton High School students, Jacie Gregory and Jenny Belz, will be cheering for the Arkansas Razorbacks next year.
However, unlike most Fayetteville freshman they will be doing so on the sidelines because both were named earlier this month to the 2011 cheerleading squad.
Belz, 17, the daughter of Dan and Mary Belz, and Gregory, 17, the daughter of Jim and Jana Gregory, will join former Panthers cheerleader Carly Glover, 19, who graduated from Benton in 2010.

Robert ‘Butch’ Hawkland

Robert “Butch†Hawkland, 71, of Benton passed away April 19, 2011. 
He was born Aug. 21, 1939, in Pennock, Minn., to the late James and Mary (Hansen) Hawkland.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters; and one brother.
Survivors include two sons, Donnie and Tony Hawkland, both of Grand Prairie, Texas; four grandchildren, Mindy, Travis, Kristy and Eric; one brother, Donald Hawkland of Minneapolis, Minn.; two sisters, Maxine Massey of Omaha, Neb., and Dorothy Smith of Avilla; nieces and nephews; and his adopted family at Arkansas Health Center.

Emily LuVenia Newcomb Hurliman was received into the loving arms of our Lord Jesus at the age of 91 on April 19, 2011, in Benton.
LuVenia was born Nov. 20, 1919, in Saline County to Lee and Mary Church Newcomb.

Aubrey Brewer, 65, of Benton died Wednesday, April 20, 2011, at his home.
Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Roller-Ballard Funeral Home with interment in Mt. Harmony Cemetery in Haskell.
