Bryant sophomore wins triple jump

At the 54th annual Meet of Champions held Saturday at Lake Hamilton High School, Bryant sophomore Alexis Royal won the triple-jump title.
With wind speeds up to 25 mph buffeting the competitors, Royal jumped 36 feet, 11 inches on her second attempt to secure her victory.
Royal’s margin of victory was a full 10 inches farther than the other competitors. Jasmine Marks of Camden Fairview was second with a jump of 36’1.

Lorene Shaver

Mrs. Lorene Shaver, age 90, of Benton died Tuesday, May 10, 2011. She was born September 14, 1920, in Lamar. Lorene was a housewife and a member of Geyer Springs Baptist Church and a member of the Easter Star. She was preceded in death of her parents, Jerome E. and Arnie Owens Cromer and three sisters.
Survivors include her brother and sister-in-law, J.E. Cromer and wife, Carol of Norfork; nephew, Joseph Cromer; niece, Jacquelyn Cromer; and three grandchildren.
Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bayou Meto Cemetery in Jacksonville. Rev. Tom Brock will be officiating.

Helen Elizabeth Hickey

Helen Elizabeth Hickey, age 88, of Benton, passed away Friday, May 13, 2011. She was born January 12, 1923, in Paron. Mrs. Hickey was a hairdresser and a member of First Baptist Church in Benton. She was preceded in death by her parents, Buck and Delia Holland; husband, Lynn Hickey; sister, Pauline Moberly and brother, Bob White. 
She is survived by two sons, Dwight Hickey of Benton and Glenn Hickey and wife, Sandy of Little Rock; one grandson, Jeffrey J. Hickey and wife, Renee; and two great-grandchildren, Taylor and Andrew Hickey.

Benton rallies in 7th, defeats Mountain Home

SHERWOOD — The game of softball is all about momentum, and in Monday’s semifinal game between Benton and Mountain Home momentum was being tossed between the two teams like a hot potato.
“We got the most out of our momentum,” coach Eric Ryan said. “We would get it and they would get it. We would go back and forth.”
The Benton Lady Panthers scored five runs in the seventh inning to defeat Mountain Home 7-5 to advance to their third straight 6A State Final in Fayetteville.
