June 7th
The Benton Everett GMC AA Legion baseball team defeated Little Rock Blue Post but lost to Pine Bluff in Saturday’s tournament at Pine Bluff High School.
Everett scored a run in the first inning, five in the second, one in the fourth, one in the fifth and two in the sixth to defeat Blue Post 10-9 in the first game. Blue Post scored a run in the fourth and eight in the fifth.
Dylan Oliver pitched three innings, allowing just two hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Holden Hanley pitched one inning, but allowed six runs on two hits with a strikeout and a walk.
June 6th
A glad reunion is underway in Heaven as Servant of God and beloved friend of all who knew him, the Reverend James R. Buie, joined those who have gone before him on Thursday evening, June 2, 2011. Those who remain in faith of yet another sweet homecoming include his dear wife, Ms. Evelyn Buie of Malvern; children, Mike and Brenda Carr, and Randy and Janice Moore of Malvern, Gay Dumas and Victor and Marsha Smith of Benton; sisters, Areta Sadler and Martha Ernest; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. In addition with scores of family and friends, Bro.
The Benton Junior Legion team Sport Shop lost three straight games in a tournament in Jacksonville including a 6-5 loss to Rosebud, a 8-5 loss to Jacksonville and a 11-0 rout to Sheridan on Sunday.
In Sunday’s game against Sheridan, Sport Shop managed just three hits while Sheridan scored 11 runs on nine hits with just one error. Benton’s Tyler Massey had a single in the first inning and Jay Davies had a single in the second.
Tyler Turbyfill had a single in the fifth inning to account for all three hits. Braxton Zimmerman reached on a walk in the second inning.
June 4th
Linoel Dwain Boyette, age 58, of Benton, passed away Friday, June 3, 2011. He was born March 22, 1953 in Benton, Ark.Â
Dwain was preceded in death by his father, Don Boyette.
He is survived by a son, Anthony Boyette and wife Sherri of Benton; a daughter, Shelly Boyette of Malvern; his mother, Shirley Boyette of Benton; two brothers, Kenneth Boyette and John Boyette, both of Benton; a sister, Christina Bradshaw of Benton; and five grandchildren.
Funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 6, at Ashby Funeral Home with burial to follow at Harmony Cemetery.
Mary Louise Gilbert, 85, of Benton passed away on June 2, 2011.Â
Mary was born on Aug. 25, 1925, to the late Thomas and Ellen Miller in Fairview, Ark.
She was a member of Christ Church for over 30 years; she would always start her day by reading her Bible. Mrs. Gilbert enjoyed singing, reading, word search puzzles, taking photos and spending time with her family.Â
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 59 years, Junior Gilbert; two brothers; and three sisters.
Mary Gusaline Thompson, age 80, of Benton, passed away Friday, June 3, 2011. She was born November 18, 1930, in Bauxite, Ark.Â
Mrs. Thompson was retired from Saline Memorial Hospital and a member of New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church.Â
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gus Alfred and Audrie Neal Shiftlett, and a sister, Carmen.
BENTON — It didn't take long for Bauxite senior Tristan Rogers to find her groove. Before Friday's annual charity basketball game, Rogers said "it had been a while" since she had shot the ball or played.
It didn't seem to matter though as she scored three points off the bench in the first quarter and would finish the game with about 14 points, including four three-pointers.
Rogers, an all-conference player for the Lady Miners, said afterward, "You never lose it."
June 2nd
Jerry Dean McVay of Durano, Colo. died of coronary heart disease Monday, May 23, 2011, at his home. He was 60.
Mr. McVay was born August 24, 1950, to Gerald and Mildred McVay in Iowa. During his life he lived in Iowa, New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and Arkansas. He lived in Arkansas for 22 years before moving to Durango in April 2007.
He worked as a janitor at Walmart for more than a decade, first in Arkansas and then in Durango.
Mary Virginia Barrett, age 79 of Little Rock, passed away on May 28, 2011. Mrs. Barrett was born on May 9, 1932. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold F. Barrett and her parents, Lynn E. and Marie Thompson.
Henry Joe Hajek, Jr. of Benton passed away on May 31, 2011. Henry was born on November 24, 1927, in Flatonia, Texas to the late Henry, Sr. and Angelina Hajek. Mr. Hajek was a veteran of both the Army and Navy and was retired from Pat Salmon & Sons. He was also a member of Highland Heights Baptist Church.
