Benton 9s defeat Bryant to win SW Regional

In the first-ever all Saline County regional, the Benton 9-year-olds defeated Bryant in the Cal Ripken Southwest Regional with a score of 4-0 in the final.
Benton’s Peyton Pallette took control of the game early and finished with a complete game one-hit shutout over Bryant, who reached the tournament finals after defeating Little Rock Junior Deputy 6-3.
“They had their ace going. It was a great game,” Bryant coach Clint Hilson said.
“We were really impressed with him and just couldn’t hit him.
Bryant’s only hit came in the fifth inning with a hit up a middle by Trey McKim.

Roy Lional Leland Jr.

Roy Lional Leland Jr. 86 of Alexander, formerly of Lonoke, passed away on Aug. 5, 2011.
Roy was born May 30, 1925, to the late LeRoy and Vivian Leland in Los Angeles, Calif.  He was a member of First Assembly of God in Benton. 
Mr. Leland was a true Christian man and loved sharing the gospel with others. He taught Sunday School at Zimmerman’s Nursing Home for more than 38 years.
Roy was a wonderful father, grandfather and friend.

Houston Brazil

Houston Brazil, 78, of Hot Springs, went home to be with his Lord on Thursday, August 4.  Oldest of eight children, he was born January 21, 1933 in Saline County.  Mr. Brazil was an entrepreneur; having owned Brazil Auto Repair on Hwy 5 in Benton and multiple other businesses in Saline County. He was also a Lieutenant for the Benton Police Department.  Mr. Brazil was a Christian, a Mason and a Shriner.  He was preceded in death by his parents, Lilburn and Recie Cochran Brazil; four siblings, Carolyn Bailey, Floyd Brazil, Beverly Coker and Jean Dumond and a grandson, David McGee.
 

Betty Bailey

Betty Bailey, 62, of Magnolia, passed away Thursday, August 4.  She was born December 7, 1948 in El Dorado, to the late William Archie and Bertha Mae Gorum.  Mrs. Bailey was a homemaker.
 
She is survived by two sons, Glen and Micky Carman; four daughters, Tonya Wells, Donna Deering, Lesa Chambers and Jan Mays; two brothers, Robert and Larry Gorum; sister, Linda Paxton; thirteen grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
 
Graveside services will be 10 a.m. Monday, August 8 at Traskwood Cemetery.  Rev. Brady Lane will be officiating.

Richard Dale Bryant

 Richard Dale Bryant, 60, of Benton died Saturday August 6, at his home. He was born July 23, 1951 in Benton. Richard worked for the Saline County Road Dept. and was a member of Sharon Baptist Church.
 
Survivors include a brother and sister-in-law, Alvin and Johnnie Bryant, Benton; sister, Mary Edmonson, Camden; five nephews and four nieces.
 
Memorial services will be 6 p.m., Tuesday at Ashby Funeral Home Chapel with visitation after the service.
 
Cremation services are by Ashby Funeral Home.

Virgil (Bud) O. Shelton

August 8, 2011

Virgil (Bud) O. Shelton, 73, of Benton, passed away Friday, August 5.  He was born June 26, 1938 in Benton, to the late Virgil Henry and Nellie Marie Shelton. 

He retired from Alcoa and was of the Baptist faith.

Mr. Shelton was a U.S. Marine serving in the Korean War and the Bay of Pigs.The following newspaper account described the latter experience: 

Miryah Jo Rowland

Miryah Jo Rowland, 17, of Benton passed on Thursday, August 4.  Miryah was born August 13, 1993 in Little Rock.  She is preceded in death by her father Scott Rowland and grandfather Travis Rowland.
     Survivors include her mother Jennifer Bradley, grandmothers Cathy Eichler and Janet Stamper; her great-grandparents Regina Duckett and J.E. and Clarice Fields, also by her devoted boyfriend and companion Kris Zumwalt, great aunt Trudy Sher, and along with a host of family and friends that will miss her dearly.

Max Theodore Linz

Max Theodore Linz resident of Bryant, died Saturday August 6, at Saline Memorial Emergency Room at the age of 81. Max was born May 8 1930 in North Little Rock, parents Clarence Linz and Bessie Griebel. December 24, 1949 he was married to Flora Patrick of Bauxite. He served 48 years with the Union Pacific Railway. He enjoyed tending the yard, flowers and pool and always put the needs of his children and grandchildren first. Private devoted taxi driver he would always chauffer grandchildren to school, dance, gymnastics or band.

John Darrell Fee

John Darrell Fee, 60 of Little Rock, died Saturday, August 6, at St. Vincent’s Arkansas Hospice. He was born on April 14, 1951 in Lawton, Oklahoma to his parent’s Lawrence Alfred Fee and Ruby Lee Hayes. John was a veteran of the United States Army having served in Vietnam receiving two Purple Hearts, the Silver Star, the Combat Infantry badge, received the Peace Medal from the Republic of Vietnam and was a member of the 173rd Airborne. In addition, he enjoyed fishing, camping and riding motorcycles and was of the Catholic Faith.

Alice Mildred Reid

Alice Mildred Reid, 82, of Benton, passed away Sunday August 7, in Booneville. She was born November 5, 1928 in Magazine, to Roy Guy and Sara Edith (Forkum) McGhee.
She was a retired pharmacy clerk at Westside Pharmacy in Benton and a homemaker. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Magazine.
She is preceded in death by a infant son Richard Allen Reid.
She is survived by one daughter, Alicia Lynn Reid of Janesville, Wisconsin and one son Kenneth Blake Reid of Bee Branch.
