Operation Christmas Child coming to Benton

First Baptist Church in Downtown Benton will be serving as a relay center for Operation Christmas Child in Saline County.
Lisa Baldwin, a volunteer for the project, noted that this is "a worldwide children's relief project that uses gift-filled shoe boxes to let hurting boys and girls know that they are loved and not forgotten."
She said this is a division of Samaritan's Purse, an international Christian relief organization headed by Franklin Graham, son of famed evangelist Billy Graham.
Margaret Herzfeld, a member of First Baptist Church, is organizing the local relay center.

Early voting in general election concludes today Benton location only site open

November 5, 2012

Today is the final day in Saline County to vote early for the Nov. 6 general election. Only the Benton site will be open today, between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the county voting facility in Benton ("Vote Here" building adjacent to the Saline County Annex). The Bryant and Lonsdale area early voting locations will not be open today.
Thus far, 21,861 ballots have been cast from early voters in Saline County, according to tallies from the Saline County Clerk's Office.

Theodore Ernest McElroy

On November 2, 2012 one of God’s true Cowboys, Theodore Ernest McElroy, went to be with his Lord.  He grew up in Checotah, OK. with his brother Larry and sisters Mozelle, Betty, Allita, Dewaynea, and Hazel and his loving parents Ernest and Josie.
He had a beautiful life with his wife Pauline and his kids Paula, Sonny, Ricky and Steven. He had six grandchildren, Jeff, Shane, Jacob, Sidney, Checotah, and Alec who loved him with the all of their hearts and whom he loved with the whole of his heart. 

Glenda Sue Mitchell

Glenda Sue Mitchell, 72, of Benton, passed away Friday, Nov. 2. 
She was born March 3, 1940, in Benton to the late Murray and Margarita Hamn.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond Mitchell of Benton; a son, Gary Rhodes of South Carolina; two daughters, Tracie Collie of Cabot and Kimberly Baker of Arizona; three stepchildren, Debbie Eldridge of Hattieville, Tammy Chastain of Siloam Springs and Tony Mitchell of Louisiana; a sister, Wanda Witham of Benton; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Donald Lee Denley

Donald Lee Denley, 66, of Benton passed away Friday, Nov. 2.  He was born Sept. 9, 1946, in White Lake, Miss. Mr. Denley was a U.S. Army veteran and retired from the Benton Services Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis Maxwell and Ruby Smith Denley; and a brother, James Denley.
He is survived by his son, Randy Denley of Florida; a brother, Tommy Brotherton of Benton; two sisters, Helen Wyble of Missouri and Mary Russell of Benton; and two grandchildren, Janelle and Caden Denley.
A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 7, at Ashby Funeral Home.

Elizabeth P. (Bettye) Blake

Elizabeth P. (Bettye) Blake after 100+ years on this earth has gone to her eternal home to be with her Lord. Born on March 27, 1912 in North Little Rock, she was the second daughter of Max J. and Helen J. Pruniski.   She lost her mother when she was three years old and was reared by her father and grandmother.  She graduated from Mt. St. Mary Academy in Little Rock in 1927, and married Christopher Patrick (Pete) Blake in 1940 at St.

Linda 'Darlene' Craig

Linda “Darlene” Craig, 61, of Alexander passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 31. She was born Feb. 28, 1951 in Benton to Dale Grant and Eleanor Baker.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Linda is survived by her loving companion, Booker Simpson; four daughters; three sons; two sisters; six brothers; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 4, at Arkansas Funeral Care, 2620 W. Main St. in Jacksonville. Burial will be at Bayou Meto Cemetery. Arrangements are by Arkansas Funeral Care.

Carl Evon Berry Sr.

Carl Evon Berry Sr., 46 of Alexander went to be with his Lord on Oct. 29.  He was born Jan. 19, 1966, to Tank and Pearlen Berry in Tucker.  Carl was very proud to serve his country, retiring from the Army after 22 years of service. He also was retired from the U.S. Postal Service.
He was a member of Longley Baptist Church in Little Rock.
Carl loved to go fishing, camping and spending time with his family.  He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend.
He was preceded in death by his father, Tank Berry Jr., and his sister, Linda Worsham.

Ron Mayfield

Ron Mayfield, 59, passed away on Oct. 29, at his home in Benton.  Ron was born Dec. 16, 1952, in East St. Louis, Ill. Ron was of the Lutheran faith.
He worked at Alltel in networking.

Sarah Ellen Den Evans

Sarah Ellen Dean Eaves, a resident of Dothan, Ala., went to be with the Lord on Monday, Oct. 29. She was 92.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Eaves; her son, Bill Kyser; and a grandson, Dwight Douglas Dimorier.
She is survived by her daughters, Geraldine Scribner and husband Harry of Benton, and Sue Thornton and husband, Roy Mac of Cottonwood, Ala; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.
