A golden opportunity for the Benton Panthers to begin the 2012 season with a win was literally given away Tuesday evening at War Memorial Stadium. The Panthers fell 42-28 to Class 4A member Arkadelphia in the First Security Kickoff Classic.
Five turnovers and an unusual two-play drive in the fourth quarter doomed the Panthers. Arkadelphia scored the game’s final 22 points to seal the win.
The Bryant Lady Hornets’ volleyball team hooked up with an old conference foe on Tuesday. The Lady Hornets played the Conway Lady Wampus Cats in Conway, but Bryant came out on the losing end, falling 3-1 (18-25, 25-21, 19-25, 19-25). The Lady Hornets had won the second set to tie the match at 1-1 and were up 15-9 before the Lady Cats came roaring back to win.
Detectives with the Benton Police Department are investigating a rash of vehicle break-ins in four different neighborhoods.
Chief Kirk Lane said that during a recent meeting with Arkansas Chiefs of Police Association, it was noted that other agencies in the state are seeing an influx of large groups of suspects targeting neighborhoods for these types of crimes. He said the unknown suspects are traveling together throughout neighborhoods with the intention of spreading out to locate easy targets — unlocked vehicles — and then share the items stolen with each other.
