The Bryant Lady Hornets volleyball team competed in the Lady Cyclone Tournament in Russellville over the weekend and though they fell just short of a first-place finish, the Lady Hornets still had a successful tournament.
âWe came home with a second-place finish,â Bryant Coach Beth Solomon said. âI'm proud of that. I told the girls that we got out of this tournament what we needed. Â I'm sad that we didn't win that last game, but the girls fought hard that game. Â We needed this. Â We needed to see this higher-level play that is more like what our postseason play will look like.â
It took three more weeks than Saline County has been used to the past several years, but Salt Bowl week is officially here. The Benton Panthers and Bryant Hornets kicked off the week with a Salt Bowl press conference at War Memorial Stadium late Monday afternoon in preparation for Fridayâs Salt Bowl at WMS in Little Rock.
âThis one is a little bit different in that itâs not the first game of the year,â Salt Bowl organizer Shane Broadway said. âItâs Week 4, but this one counts. This is a conference clash and there is a lot more riding on the line than just county pride.â
The Downtown Benton Association is sponsoring its third semi-annual Creative Arts Festival on Saturday, Sept. 22.
"Response to the annual spring festival was so great and such a success the last couple of years that we decided to add one in the fall," said Janet Ausburn, chairperson of the association.
"Saturday's festival will be even bigger and better offering more seasonal items along with other great handmade original crafts," Ausburn said.
She noted that the last festival drew more than 40 vendors.
Shirley May McGinley Evans, 82, of Nashville, formerly of Benton and Bryant, died on Saturday, Sept. 15, at a Nashville nursing home.
She was born Oct. 23, 1929, in Little Rock, to Connell and Lillie Tull McGinley.
She was a graduate of Bryant High School and a longtime bookkeeper at White Furniture in Benton. She was a faithful member of both Benton and Bryant First United Methodist churches.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond E. Evans; a son-in-law, Rick Castleberry' and a brother, Harold McGinley.

James Dale Wooten Jr. âWiegeâ, 59, of Mabelvale, passed away at his home on September 13. He was born on October 22, 1952 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Wiege served in the US Army and was a member of the 82nd Air Borne. Wiege worked at many trades throughout his life. His most cherished moments were time spent fishing, hunting, and listening to sports on the radio.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Patricia Ann McDaniel; his brother Terry Mike Wooten and his sister Patricia Lynn Perry.
Jack Dalton Wilder, Jr., 76, went to be with his Lord and Savior September 14. He passed away peacefully in his home with family by his side. He was born August 28, 1936. He was a member of The Church at Rock Creek. He was retired from Lucent Technologies and Arkansas State Highway Department. He enjoyed playing golf, watching football, bowling, and joking around with family and friends. The family would like to thank the VA Home-Based Medical Team and Arkansas Hospice.
He was preceded in death by his first wife JoAnn Carter Wilder and his parents Jack and Alice Wilder.
J. Marie Bumgardner, 88, of Benton went to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 13. She was born Nov. 10, 1923, in England, to the late Charlie J. and Minnie Mae Miller. She was a homemaker, an excellent cook and a member of Highland Heights Baptist Church.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her husband of 42 years, William Z. "Bill" Bumgardner; three brothers, Charlie, Claude and Calvin Miller' and three sisters, Rita Woods, Eula Clark, and Pat Chaney.
Infant Anthony Zane Griffin infant son of Kristina Danielle âKrissyâ Waldrep and Cecil DeWayne âC.J.â Griffin, Jr. of Benton, passed away September 13 at St. Vincent Hospital in Little Rock.
He is survived by his parents, maternal grandparents, Charles Dewayne Waldrep of Beaumont, Texas and Ernie and Tina Coppock of the Shaw Community; paternal grandparents, , Jo Ann Griffin of Benton and the late Cecil Griffin, and a host of aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Sandra Leah Haley Blamberg, 52, of Mabelvale, went to be with the Lord on September 12, with her loving family by her side. She was born on October 17, 1959 in Huntsville, Ala. She was very devoted to her children and loved to cook and cross-stitch.Â
She is survived by her loving husband, Bobby Blamberg, three sons; Kyle Weston Haley and his fiancĂ©e Carrie Jackson, Cody H. Blamberg and Robby R. Blamberg; five grandchildren, her loving parents Jackie Malloy Yelverton and John Darrell Yelverton. She will be dearly missed by her aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of family and friends. Â
Theresa Louise Teague, 51,of Benton, passed away on September 12. Theresa was born on December 25, 1960 in St. Louis, MO. Theresa worked as a LPN and had graduated in the top ten of her nursing class. She was an avid reader, loved watching movies, and working crossword and word puzzles. Theresa was a Saint Louis Rams football fan and enjoyed watching Nascar. She was Pentecostal by faith. Theresa loved spending time with her children, grandchild, and family. She always put her family first and was eagerly expecting her first grandson in October.
