Collins celebrates 100 years

Mae Collins, Bryant resident, celebrated her 100th birthday Jan. 21, with a party attended by more than 100 family members and friends, firemen from the Bryant Fire Department and a news crew from Channel 7 at the Southern Trace Rehabilitation and Care Center.
Collins, born Mae Milam, in Mineral Springs on Jan. 23, 1912, has had a rich life.
She said, "You know what, I asked God, why did he let me live to be 100, and he told me it was none of my business."
Family members traveled from all over the state, Ohio and Kentucky to ring-in Collins' century of life.

Fire scorches approximately 15 acres at Mars Hill Road Sunday afternoon. Homes threatened but not damaged.

Fire departments from Bauxite, Sardis, Shaw and Tull responded to a brush fire near Mars Hill Road south of Bauxite Sunday afternoon. The fire was fanned by high winds that brought the flames within 30 yards of homes in the area. Residents of the area stood and watched while two tanker trucks, two pumper trucks and bulldozers arrived to fight the fire.

Lady Hornets fall, but take No. 4 seed in state

It was a tale of two halves as the Bryant Lady Hornets lost 45-36 to the Little Rock Central Lady Tigers in the regular season finale for both teams in 7A Central action on Friday in the Central Fieldhouse. The Lady Hornets will be the No. 4 seed out of the Central and will play No. 5 seed Bentonville out of the West in the state tournament.

Hornets’ bad second half ends with loss

Up by five points at the half, the Bryant Hornets shot 22 percent in the second half and fell 43-41 to the Little Rock Central Tigers in the last regular-season game of the year at Central Fieldhouse on Friday. Since North Little Rock defeated Van Buren, the Hornets will have the No. 3 seed going into the 7A State Tournament in Cabot next week.

After two free throws by Central’s Kerry Young and long 3-pointer from Kyle Nelson, the Tigers took a 39-33 lead with 6:57 left in the game.

William R. “Bill” Traywick

William R. “Bill” Traywick, 83, of Benton, passed away peacefully on Feb. 25, at Saline Memorial Hospice in Bryant.  He was born on September 4, 1928 in Charlotte, North Carolina, the son of the late George Ray and Mayme Stegall Traywick.

Anneice (Spann) Hogue

Anneice (Spann) Hogue, 82, of Benton, died Feb. 25, at her home in Benton.  Born July 14, 1929 in Bauxite, she was the only daughter of Melvin and Euldene Spann.  She attended school in Bauxite until 1945.  After moving to Benton, she graduated from Benton High School in 1947.  She married Fred (Tony) Hogue on September 13, 1947.  Mrs. Hogue was a longstanding member of the First United Methodist Church in Benton.

Kitty Emmons Brigham

Kitty Emmons Brigham, 97, of Dumas, mother of Saline County Justice of the Peace Barbara Howell, died Friday, Feb. 24, in Little Rock.
Kitty was born Dec. 22, 1914, to the late John and Kitty Windham Emmons in Carrollton, Miss.
She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church of Dumas, where she taught Sunday School.
Kitty was a graduate of Dermott High School.
Preceding her in death were her husband, John F. Brigham Sr.; three brothers; and a sister.

Marianna McKee

Marianna McKee of Fort Smith passed away Thursday, Feb. 23. She was born May 26, 1914, in Wolfe City, Texas, to Anna and Rufus Johnston.
A retired teacher from Fort Smith Public Schools, she was a member of Goddard United Methodist Church, an avid reader, a bird enthusiast and an Arkansas Razorback fan.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Louis McKee; and a sister, Ophelia Shepherd.

Cathryn Elizabeth Brown

Cathryn Elizabeth Brown, 88, of Benton passed away Thursday, Feb. 23, at Heartland Rehab and Care Center.  She was born March 1, 1923 in McCrory to James and Oma Rooks VanLandingham.  She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. 
She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Clyde Brown; her parents; a brother, Richard; and a son, Larry Brown.
