Record crowds turn out for county fair's final night

Saline County Fair 2012 is now history and fair officials are pleased with the community response.
Tom Wallace, a member of the Saline County Fair Association Board, said total attendance for the week was estimated at 30,000.
For the last night, attendance was at an all-time high, he said. "The parking lots stayed full and there were lines everywhere, but everyone seemed to be having a great time.
"Attendance at the two nights of the rodeo was 3,500," Wallace said.
The rodeo competition drew 247 cowboys and cowgirls who received a total payout of $27,266 in prize money," he said.

An imagination is a terrible thing to waste

We have all heard the tagline on an advertisement that goes like this: A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste. It can be taken another step by saying an Imagination is a terrible thing to waste. I guess it could be argued that without a mind to waste, imagination falls the wayside by default. Perhaps this is true.

Reading is great, but never forget the fun found at the movies

There's a bit of irony to this week's segment of Sense & Nonsense. On the same day that we are introducing a reading column, based on what area people are reading — and which I'm putting together — I'm basing this week's regular effort on memories of the place where I saw my first movies.
Not that movies and books would be viewed as opposite entities anyway — at least not exactly — since many of our most revered films originated in book form before finding their way to the Silver Screen.

LITTLE ROCK – The University of Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks came to the Arkansas Razorbacks’ second home of War Memorial Stadium in Little Rock and upset the No. 8-ranked team in the nation 34-31 in overtime. The Razorbacks led 21-7 at the half and 28-7 early in the third quarter before allowing the Warhawks and quarterback Kolton Browning to come back for the win in front of 53,089 fans.
