Teen missing from Benton

The Benton Police Department is asking the public to help located 17-year-old Katelyn North.
She is described as a five-foot, eight-inch tall white female, around 135 pounds, with green eyes and brown hair. Authorities did not have details of what North could be wearing, but believe she is still in the Central Arkansas area.
Anyone with information on Katelyn’s whereabouts is encouraged to contact the Benton Police Department at 778-1171 or 315-TIPS (8477). Individuals also may send an anonymous tip about his whereabouts to CRIMES (274637) with the keyword BNPD in the body of the text.

Bryant School Board to focus on salary schedules Feb. 21 at 6 p.m. meeting.

Salary schedules for certified and classified employees of the Bryant School District are scheduled for a vote by the Bryant School Board in a Tuesday meeting.
That session will begin at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 21, at the district’s Professional Development Center.
The board also plans to vote on the district's technology plan for 2012-14.
Richard Stipe, district business manager, will present the January financial report and a donation report.

Herzfeld seeks Benton council seat

Lifetime Benton resident James Herzfeld says he wants to serve on the Benton City Council.
Herzfeld plans to seek the Ward 4, Position 2, seat currently held by Alderman David Sparks.
All council positions, along with other municipal posts, are nonpartisan. Filing for the positions opens in July.
Herzfeld, 71, is no stranger to community service.
Beginning in 1977, he served 10 years on the Benton School Board and then served 13 years on the board of directors of the Saline County Board of Education. He currently serves on the Pulaski Tech board of directors, service he began in 2003.

County jail G.E.D. program gives hope to inmates

One pencil, one piece of paper, one open and attentive mind, and at least one person's belief that anyone can change through the power of education, that is all eight inmates inside the Saline County jail said they need. A chance to prove to you, their families, and most importantly themselves, that lives and communities can be transformed.

New superintendent looking forward to meeting district employees, students, residents.

Many community residents have said they are eager to meet the man who will be guiding the Benton School District in the coming year and an opportunity to do so will be coming up on Monday, Feb. 27.
At 7 p.m. that day, a "meet-and-greet" event is scheduled to introduce the newly hired superintendent, Jeff Collum of Longview, Texas, to the community. That event will be held in the district's new athletic complex.
And while local residents are eager to meet the new superintendent, Collum says he is equally looking forward to getting to know area residents.

Charlotte Goss Whatley, 68, of Benton went to be with her Lord on Thursday, Feb. 16.
She was born Oct. 8, 1943, in Little Rock to the late John Calvin Goss and Callie Mae Cochran Goss. She was an accountant for Walmart for 30 years and was a member of The Church at Rock Creek.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepmother, Elizabeth Goss; a son, David Calvin Whatley; her brothers, Gary, Phillip, David and Wallace Goss and Charles William Barker.

BAMM Board to honor new Wall of Fame inductees, 1955 cross-country tream

Benton Athletic Memorial Museum will be inducting three new members into the BAMM Wall of Fame on Saturday night at the organization's annual banquet.
This year's inductees are Becky Fulcher, Emily Arnold Hinton and Jeff Freeman.
Donnie Burks, executive director of the BAMM Museum, said the banquet honoring the three inductees will take place at 6 p.m. at the Benton High School cafeteria.
In addition to recognizing the inductees, the BAMM Board of Directors plans to present an Exemplary Service Award to Gary James, executive director of the Benton Area Chamber of Commerce.

John Duke to be recognized at 2nd Annual Heart of Saline Recognition Dinner.

John Duke's many years of service to Saline Memorial Hospital and to the Saline County community will be recognized at the second annual Heart of Saline Recognition Dinner and fundraiser.
The event is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 23, at The Center at Bishop Park.
The Saline Memorial Health Foundation is hosting the event.

Haskell officer fired.

The Haskell Police Department is one officer lighter after the recent firing of Brandon Carter.
According to Chief Mike Holt, Carter was terminated on Jan. 24 for violating a departmental policy.
Haskell Mayor Jeff Arey added that Carter was dismissed specifically for violating the department's Taser policy.
Arey said "there was a complaint made and there was an internal investigation" that ultimately ended Carter's tenure as a Haskell officer.
Arey noted that no person was injured due to Carter's actions.
