Lady Cardinals fall in thriller

LITTLE ROCK - With every beginning, there is an end. Just like the best or worst book in the world, it always ends in one way or another. There is no difference in this year’s Harmony Grove Lady Cardinals and most of all, this year’s seniors. After beating the Cutter Morning Star Lady Eagles on Tuesday night in the opening round of the 5-3A South district tournament at Episcopal, the Lady Cardinals found themselves fighting for a bid to the 3A regional tournament.

Miners' season continues with win in district

MALVERN – The Bauxite Miners’ season will continue as they picked up a 41-33 win against the Ashdown Panthers Wednesday night in the 7-4A district tournament held at the Bill Hunt Fieldhouse in Malvern. The Miners qualified for the regional tournament next week, but first have to face the No. 1 team in the 4A conference, Pulaski Academy.

“This time of year it’s a one-game season,” Bauxite Coach Mark Smith said. “It’s game to game and our guys, our seniors, we told them if you don’t want your career to be over, you’ve got to step it up.”

Lady Miners survive scare

MALVERN – It wasn’t pretty, but the Bauxite Lady Miners extended their season with a 55-51 win over the Maumelle Lady Hornets Wednesday in the 7-4A district tournament in Malvern. The Lady Miners now have No. 2 seed and host Malvern tonight.

The Lady Miners (19-9, 11-4 7-4A), the No. 3 seed, looked as if they were going to have smooth sailing when they got up 21-8 after two Mary Crow free throws with 1:29 left in the first half, and leading 23-11 at halftime, but the third quarter and freshman Kamry Orr had other designs.

Collum named Benton superintendent

There's a new superintendent-elect in the Benton School District.
In a 9 p.m. meeting Tuesday, the seven-member board unanimously voted officially to offer the job to Jeff Collum of Tyler, Texas.
Collum previously had agreed to accept the job for an annual salary of $132,500.
Collum currently is serving as executive director of secondary education of the Tyler ISD, which includes oversight for two 5A high schools, six middle schools, an athletic department, career and technology education and university initiatives.

Lady Panthers cruise to 14th straight

BENTON – The Benton Lady Panthers had no problem in dispensing the J.A. Fair Lady War Eagles 58-17 Tuesday night in 6A South conference action at Benton Arena. The Lady Panthers ho-hummed their way to the team’s 14th consecutive victory and improved to 12-0 in the 6A South.

“Fair is way down,” Benton Coach Jerry Chumley said. “We got through and didn’t have any injuries so mission accomplished.”

Lady Cardinals advance to second round of tourney

LITTLE ROCK – The Harmony Grove Lady Cardinals came into Tuesday night’s opening round of the 5-3A South District Tournament in control of their own fate. There was only one problem standing in their way and that was the Lady Eagles from Cutter Morning Star, a team Harmony Grove narrowly escaped with a win on the road just a few days ago.

Beavers fall in nail-biter

LITTLE ROCK – The Glen Rose Beavers came into the first round of the 5-3A District Tournament at Episcopal (Little Rock) with nothing to lose and everything to gain as they tried to play spoiler and keep their season alive. But, there would be no fireworks on the Glen Rose side as Fountain Lake narrowly got past the Beavers 44-42.

Bryant Swim Team Dominates Regional Meet

It was first place wins for both Bryant Hornets swim teams on Saturday, Feb. 11, at the 2012 South Regional Swim and Dive Championship. The 24-event meet was held at Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia. 
At the end of the nine-school South Regional meet, the Bryant Hornets girls team won with a total of 520 points and the boys won with a total of 430 points, with both teams dominating and receiving regional trophies. El Dorado was second in the girls with a score of 284 and Magnolia was second in the boys division with 291 points.

Benton School Board makes selection for superintendent

Jeff Morrow, president of the Benton School Board, announced last night that Jeff Collum of Longview, TX will be the next superintendent of the Benton School District.

February 14, 2012

JoAnn Story, 77, died Thursday, Feb. 9. She was born Jan. 22, 1935, in Biggers to the late Silas and Lela Turner.
Mrs. Story was a homemaker, loved crocheting and baking, but most importantly she was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 58 years, Jesse “Jack” Story, a daughter Pamela Lambert; and a brother, James Turner.
