Benton School Board makes selection for superintendent

Jeff Morrow, president of the Benton School Board, announced last night that Jeff Collum of Longview, TX will be the next superintendent of the Benton School District.

JoAnn Story

JoAnn Story, 77, died Thursday, Feb. 9. She was born Jan. 22, 1935, in Biggers to the late Silas and Lela Turner.
Mrs. Story was a homemaker, loved crocheting and baking, but most importantly she was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother and sister.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 58 years, Jesse “Jack” Story, a daughter Pamela Lambert; and a brother, James Turner.

Hugh Edwin Phelan

Hugh Edwin Phelan, 93, of Donaldson, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 11, at Hot Spring County Medical Center in Malvern. He was born March 30, 1918, to Thomas and Maude Phelan in Malvern. He was a Christian and worshiped at Donaldson Missionary Baptist Church, where he was a member. He taught Sunday School and was active in the construction of the current church building. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in the U.S. Air Force. He had served in the U.S. Army Air Corps as a B-17 bombardier during World War II.

Susan Gregory Baldwin

Susan Gregory Baldwin passed over into glory Feb. 7 after an extended illness. She was born Aug. 23, 1961.
She was a longtime resident of Benton, before relocating to Sophia, N.C.

Fred Morgan (Tony) Hogue

Fred Morgan (Tony) Hogue, 93, of Benton passed away Monday, Feb. 13.  He was born Dec. 4, 1918, in Bauxite to the late Jim and Lillie Hogue.
Tony was a member of First United Methodist Church in Benton, was an avid golfer and was especially fond of Silver Springs Golf Club and Men’s Golf Association. He was a proud World War II veteran, serving as a Seabee in the South Pacific for four years.

Patricia Ann Garrett

Patricia Ann Garrett, 63, of Benton, passed away Friday, Feb. 10.  She was born April 21, 1948, in Nebraska City, Neb.
Mrs. Garrett taught school in the Bryant School District and then went on to be a teacher/counselor in the Harmony Grove District.
She was a member of the Apostolic Tabernacle United Pentecostal Church in Benton, the National Education Association and the Arkansas Education Association.
Mrs. Garrett was preceded in death by her parents, Melvin Edgar VanWinkle, Sr. and Rena Louise Willis VanWinkle; and her brother, Melvin Edgar VanWinkle II.

Dr. John D. Wright

Dr. John D. Wright, was born Aug.15, 1925, in Saline County, and passed away at his home surrounded by loved ones in Benton on Feb. 10.
He served as a Lt J.G. in the U.S. Navy during World War II, during which time he eloped with Jeana Merle White on March 22, 1945.  He went to college and medical school through the V-12 program and practiced medicine for more than 50 years.
He was active in the community and served many years on the Benton School Board. He was a deacon at First Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday School for 56 years.

Cecil E. Rollon

Cecil E. Rollon, 86, of Benton, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 8, in Siloam Springs. 
He was born Jan. 22, 1926, in Mena to the late Marvin and Mary Rollon.
Mr. Rollon retired as a superintendent from Owasso Furniture Co. He enjoyed reading, woodworking, and teaching Sunday School.  He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Siloam Springs.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Alice Mae Rollon; one brother, Elmer Rollon; and his two sisters, Maxine Richmond and Eva Rollon.

Joe Rene Shores Golenor

Joe Rene Shores Golenor of Benton died Tuesday, Feb. 7, at home in the care of family and friends.  She was born November 19, 1925 in Texarkana, Ark. to James and Velma Shores and spent most of her childhood in Monticello.   

Joe Carl Cloud

Joe Carl Cloud, Sr, 73, of Hot Springs, died Thursday, Feb. 9. He was born July 23, 1938 in Benton, to the late Tilford and Mary Caroline (Caldwell) Cloud. Joe was a member of Apostolic Faith Tabernacle Church and a 1958 Graduate of Benton High School; Quarterback and Captain of the Benton High School Panthers as well as an avid Razorback fan and self employed plumber.
He is preceded in death by his parents; sisters Gerine and Wilma and brothers Phillip, Charles and Hubert Cloud.
