Missing Teen update: Wiggins is back home

A teen reported missing more than a month ago is safe and back at home, according to the Benton Police Department.
Destoni Wiggins, 17, had been reported missing on March 8 when witnesses told police that she walked away from Chicken Express on Landers Drive and was not heard from since.
Wiggins mother told The Saline Courier late Tuesday that her daughter was found at the Chenault Creek Apartments in Little Rock.
According to police, no persons are being charged with any crimes at this time.

Sen. Pryor tours Benton projects including events center location

U.S. Sen. Mark Pryor, D-Ark., spent several hours in Benton on Tuesday viewing street/drainage problems and also met with city leaders about two major upcoming projects — the implementation of a four-year degree program and a facilities expansion at UALR-Benton Center and the construction of an events center/hotel project adjacent to Tinseltown Cinema.
Pryor's visit began at City Hall, where he connected with Mayor David Mattingly, who accompanied the senator throughout his visit in the city.

Mary Elizabeth Griffin

Mary Elizabeth Griffin, 82, of Benton, passed away Monday, April 9.  She was born Sept. 19, 1929, in Bauxite to the late Clifton and Pearl Bevels Crawford.  Mary was a member of New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, Ben Edgar Griffin of Benton; a sister, Marie Harding of Benton; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. today, April 11, at Ashby Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl Wright officiating.  Burial will follow at Sharon Cemetery.
Visitation is scheduled today from 1 to 2 p.m. preceding the service.

Junior pitches complete-game shutout

POYEN – After dropping a 7-4A conference game 4-0 to the Maumelle Hornets on Monday, the Bauxite Miners came back to shut out the Poyen Indians 6-0 in non-conference action on Tuesday in Poyen.
Junior pitcher Chris Revas led the Miners (8-9, 2-3 7-4A) to victory pitching a compete-game shutout, scattering three hits and striking out five without a walk.

Lady Miners win close one

POYEN – The Bauxite Lady Miners picked up a non-conference victory 6-4 over the Poyen Lady Indians on Tuesday in Poyen.

“We finally won a close one,” Bauxite Coach Wes Mode said. “We’ve had games where we had the lead and lost it.”

The Lady Miners (4-7, 1-3 7-4A) scored a run each in the first, second, fourth and fifth innings, and scored two in the third inning.

In the first inning, junior Allie Beech drew a bases-loaded walk after runners reached on an error, a walk and a single. The Lady Miners scored on a passed ball in the second inning.

Jury trial set for alleged murder accomplice

A jury trial was set on Monday for Myra Fay Terry, who allegedly helped coverup a murder and helped the killer temporarily evade law enforcement.
Terry, 54, of Hot Springs Village faces charges of hindering apprehension, abuse of a corpse, and tampering with evidence in the Oct. 8, 2010 death of Joe Lee "Joey" Richards Jr. of Benton. As of press time, Terry remains in the Saline County jail and is expected to have a jury trial on May 22-23 in the courtroom of Circuit Judge Gary Arnold.

Sorrows earns national recognition as adviser

Step into Margaret Sorrows’ classroom and within 30 seconds, it is clear the profound impact the journalism adviser of 33 years — 21 of which have been at Bryant — has had on her students. Framed award certificates and plaques border the walls. Autographed photos and notes of students long-graduated, vie for prominent placement on the esteemed adviser's desk, shelves, tables and bookcases.

Aubyn Jo Nelson, 87, of Benton, formerly of Van Buren, passed away Saturday, April 7, in a Benton nursing home. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Sallie Moss; a sister, Ina Lee Miller; and a brother, Fred Moss.

James Gary Howard

James Gary Howard, 53, of Benton passed away Saturday, April 7, at his home. He was employed as a service technician at USA Compression.  He also served in the U.S. Air Force and was a member of Holland Chapel Missionary Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Kerry Howard; a son and daughter-in-law, Chris and Jessica Howard; a daughter and son-in-law, Jamie and Seth Thomas; four grandchildren, Travis and Andrew Howard and Gabe and Aidan Thomas; and a host of many family and friends. 

Geraldine Konieczny

Geraldine Konieczny, 68, of Benton (Tull Community), passed away Sunday, April 8.  She was born May 24, 1943 in Chicago, Illinois.  Mrs. Konieczny and her husband moved to Benton in July of 1976.  She was a member of the Bauxite Historical Association and attended several local community functions.
Mrs. Konieczny was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Konieczny.
