Music will be an integral part of the 2013 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration, organizers have announced. Community residents are invited to participate in combined choirs to sing at various events.
According to co-event organizer Robin Freeman, rehearsals for combined community choir rehearsals for the celebration will be held at 6 p.m. Jan. 10, 12, and 17 at Elect Temple Church of God in Christ located at 305 S. Johnson St. in Benton.
Anyone may participate in the choir, Freeman said.
Thomas Rueben Dempsey, 70, of Haskell passed away Jan. 8.Â He was born Feb. 7, 1942 in Marked Tree to the late S.L. and Berdie Harbison Dempsey.Â Â
He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Emma Jean Moody.
Jeremy Lynn Stamper, 35, passed away on Jan. 5. Jeremy was born on June 20, 1977, in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Jeremy was a district sales manager for Sysco Foods in Little Rock.Â He loved spending time with his children and was a huge sports fan.
Jeremy loved the Razorbacks and sky diving. He played coed softball and coached baseball for the East End Express. He loved the Lord and his family.
He was preceded in death by his brother, Scott Rowland; and a niece, Miryah Rowland.
Joyce Sluder, 59, of Benton passed away Tuesday, Jan. 8. She was born Dec., 22, 1953 in Little Rock.
Joyce was a 1972 graduate of Benton High School. She was employed as a cashier at Razorback Car Wash for three years and a member of Gospel Light Baptist Church, where she was the pianist.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, Orville and Juanita Chambers.
