Saline County Quorum Court voted late Tuesday to levy an annual voluntary $5 tax on every tax statement for real property in the county for the purpose of financing animal control services in the county.
Ten justices of the peace supported the ordinance that drew harsh criticism from Mark Kizer, who represents District 3 on the court. Also voting against the ordinance were Dr. Allan Dabbs of District 5; and Mike Creekmore of District 11.
After no Major League Baseball player was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame for the first time since 1996, I’ve heard a lot of clamor that the vote should be taken away from sports writers. What? Then who is the vote supposed to go to. The fact no one got into the Hall this year is a testament to how hard it should be to get voted in, regardless who is voting.
Maxwell E. Harmon Jr., 65 of Alexander went to be with his Lord on Jan. 14.
Max was an avid golfer and loved to garden, travel and spend time talking with his many friends from McGeorge Construction.
Max retired from McGeorge in 2010 and spent his retired life traveling with his wife and tending to his dogs, Haskell and Alley, and his cat, Jake. Max was loved and will be missed greatly.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Maxwell Harmon Sr. and Oma Gene Harmon.
Adrian Blood went to be with the Lord on Jan. 14, with his family by his side.Â
He was preceded in death by his parents, Adrian and Grace Blood; and his two sisters and one stepson.
He is survived by three sons, Ronald Blood and wife Candy, Bill Blood and wife Shirley. and Roger Blood and wife Wendy; one daughter, Julie Blood; his former wife and longtime friend, Jeanette Blood; a stepson, Rickey Smith and wife Lana; and a stepdaughter, Kimberly Bagley and husband Rick. He was greatly loved and will be missed by his family and friends.
James W. “Bro. Mac” McDaniel, 79 of Benton, formerly of Jonesboro, died Tuesday, Jan. 15. He was born March 3, 1933, in Robinville, Miss., to William and Josephine Walls Scott, but was raised by his grandparents, William and Lucille McDaniel.
He was a deacon at First Baptist Church in Jonesboro. "Bro. Mac," as he was known to most. was a retired employee of IBM, a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was very active in his church and community.
He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and his first wife, Rosetta McDaniel.
James Derrell Hill, 58, of Benton passed away Monday, Jan. 14. He was born May 26, 1954, in For Smith. Derrell was a Master Electrician and taught for ACEF (Arkansas Construction Education Foundation) and was a member of First Baptist Church in Benton.Â
He was preceded in death by his father, James H. Hill.
He is survived by his mother, Mary Frances Hill; six children, Justin, Joshua, Janna, Jereme, Jonathan and Jessica; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several aunts, uncles and cousins, and a host of friends.
Cynthia Diane (Marshall) Williams, 55, of Smithton, Mo., passed away on Jan. 11, at her home.
She was born in Camden on Feb. 22, 1957. She graduated from Tipton High School and received a nursing degree from Barton County Community College.
Cindy worked as a registered nurse in emergency rooms for the majority of her life. She enjoyed gardening and making quilts for loved ones.Â
She was preceded in death by her mother, Joyce Craig.
Nancy Rogers Silfies, 55,passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, in Little Rock. She was born in Benton on Nov. 29, 1957, to John Rogers and the late Jimmie Lee Rogers.
Nancy graduated from Benton HIgh School and earned bachelor' and master's degrees from the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville. She was a teacher in the Bryant School District for about 10 years.
She chose to retire upon the birth of her children to focus on her family. She was of the Baptist faith.Â
Sam “Pokey” Gipson Sr., 73, of Benton passed away Jan. 14.Â
He was born Sept. 13, 1939, in Benton to the late Marshall and Ruth Gipson.
Pokey served in the U.S. Air Force from Aug. 8, 1957, to Aug. 7, 1963.
He retired from both the Benton Police Department and Saline County Sheriff’s Department.
At the time of his death, he was serving on the Benton Civil Service Commission.
