Quorum Court OKs annual voluntary animal services tax: Court also approves $8M in bonds for SMH additions

January 16, 2013

Saline County Quorum Court voted late Tuesday to levy an annual voluntary $5 tax on every tax statement for real property in the county for the purpose of financing animal control services in the county.
Ten justices of the peace supported the ordinance that drew harsh criticism from Mark Kizer, who represents District 3 on the court. Also voting against the ordinance were Dr. Allan Dabbs of District 5; and Mike Creekmore of District 11.

SENSE AND NONSENSE: Y'all just come on down to the house and we'll talk Southern.

As a product of the South — and a lifelong resident — I can attest to the fact that there’s a Southern expression for practically everything.
I can’t explain why we Southern folk turn our talk in a different manner. I just know that we do.
Recently, I became aware of this anew in a conversation with co-worker Maribeth Bueche, a native of Colorado. The language acquired in her midwestern upbringing didn’t encompass a lot of words and phrases that are common to those us who have never lived above the Mason-Dixon Line.

BOGGS: What does the future hold for the Courier?

January 16, 2013

By Steve Boggs, publisher of The Saline Courier

It is a privilege to serve as publisher of your local paper. The Courier has a long and rich tradition of excellence, and my goal is to maintain and add to the newspaper’s 137-year thread of reporting local news to the residents of Saline County.
I’m looking forward to getting to know people in the community and welcome any input you have. We have a solid staff with a good attitude and there is much to be done moving forward.

JOYNER: Taking interest in the small things

Not too long ago, I took my 2-year-old son, Dylan, to the zoo. I had been looking forward to this event for months because I just knew he would be absolutely mesmerized by seeing the animals.
Since he was six months old, his favorite books and toys all featured wildlife. He has always loved to play with his stuffed animals and often gets on all fours and roars like a lion.
Every time there is a dog or cat in our vicinity, his eyes light up. I thought the first trip to the zoo was going to be an incredible experience for him.
