BREAKING NEWS: Alexander officer being charged with manslaughter

An Alexander police officer has been arrested and charged with manslaughter, Saline County Prosecuting Attorney Ken Casady said.
Nancy Cummings is expected to make her first appearance in Benton District Court at 10 a.m. Friday. The arrest stems from the Sept. 8, 2012 shooting death of then 30-year-old Carleton Wallace of Bryant. Cummings claimed that she noticed Wallace walking along Brookwood St. with a pistol tucked into the waistband of his pants.

Bryant continues to address issues with apartments

An ordinance setting limitations on multifamily housing in Bryant has been drafted and is likely to be presented at the Jan. 31 City Council meeting.
Bryant Mayor Jill Dabbs has requested a special meeting with the Planning Commission to discuss the ordinance prior to the scheduled City Council meeting. Procedure calls for the commission to recommend the ordinance to council.
Dabbs is requesting the council hear it on first reading and then "let it sit" until the February meeting, leaving time for developers, residents and City Council members to examine the ordinance.

Curtis Lee Earp Sr. was born July 1, 1936, in Ralls, Texas, and passed away on Jan. 22 in Little Rock.
Curtis Sr. retired from the Benton Fire Department with 20 years of service as a senior captain. He spent years in Sunday School Bus Ministry at First Assembly of God in Little Rock.
Curtis Sr. had church affiliations with Full Gospel Cato Community and Abundant Life Center of Bryant.
He was preceded in death by his parents, B.S. and Liddie Harriet Earp of Petersburg, Texas; and one great-grandchild, Hunter Jade Allen Adcox.

Elizabeth Mae Spurgeon, 93, of Benton went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 22.
She was born Sept. 18, 1919, in Little Rock to the late Terry Albert Sutton and Lena L. Niehaus Sutton. She was an accountant for J.C. Penney Co. and of the Baptist faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband of 62 years, Claburn Spurgeon; eight brothers and sisters; and one great-grandchild.

Maxine Mae (Rice) Wilkins

Maxine Mae (Rice) Wilkins, 87, of southwest Little Rock passed away Friday, Jan. 18. She was born March 13, 1925, in Red Fork, to the late Thomas Jefferson and Lela Mae Rice.
She was a member of Gospel Assembly Church in Little Rock. Preceding her in death was a brother, James Doyle Rice of Dumas.
Maxine was a nurse before she married Robert Wilkins, who also preceded her in death. She was a lifelong Arkansas resident and spent the remainder of her life as a homemaker, mother and grandmother. Her church was integral to her daily life in Little Rock.

Thomas Joseph Massanelli, 73, of Benton passed away Jan. 18. He was born May 31, 1939, in Pine Bluff. Thomas retired from Alcoa and Heavy Equipment Co., and was an avid golfer.
He  was preceded in death by his parents, Caesar and Elena Magnini Massanelli; his wife, Susan Massanelli; two brothers and three sisters.
He is survived by his son, Michael Masssanelli of Benton; a daughter, Carol Ann Massanelli of Little Rock; two brothers, Caesar Massanelli of Hot Springs Village and James Massanelli of Hot Springs; two sisters, Rose Glove of Hot Springs and Lena Owen of Star City.

Kenneth Holdman, born Jan. 22, 1938, of Benton, went to be with our dearly beloved father in Heaven on Tuesday, Jan. 22 at 6:15 a.m., having reached his 75th birthday. Both Ken and his wife are members of Fellowship Bible Church in Benton.
Ken was an avid golfer and a devoted father, husband and grandfather and his spirit will be celebrated in Heaven as well as on Earth.  He finished out his final round of golf having set the standard for all those who follow in his footsteps.

Janie Nanette Goodman, 56, of Benton passed away Monday, Jan. 21, at Arkansas Heart Hospital in Little Rock. She was born July 9, 1956, in Benton to the late Oscar Truman “Slim” Wilson and Jo Renee Wilson Kennemur.
“Nan” graduated from Benton High School in 1974 and was of the Baptist faith. She loved gardening, crystal hunting and trips to the lake and ocean.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Truman “Buster” Wilson; one sister, Wanda Kay Wilson; her mother-in-law, Sara Goodman; one sister-in-law, Susan Berk; and one nephew, Blake Taylor.

Emma Lorene Clardy, 1-day-old daughter of Heath and Hannah Wiley Clardy of Glen Rose, passed away Thursday, Jan. 17, at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock.  She was born Jan. 16 in Little Rock. 
Left to cherish her memory are her parents, Heath and Hannah Clardy; sister Ellie Faye Clardy; grandparents William and Ginger Wiley and Mervin and Betty Clardy; great-grandmother Opal Faye Clark; and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

Mary Mildred Barnes, 93, of Bauxite passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, at Saline Memorial Hospital. She was born Jan. 12, 1920 in Mercer County, Pa., to the late Charles and Pearl (Small) Williamson. Mrs. Barnes was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Sardis. Mrs. Barnes was a very loving mother. She loved reading her Bible and loved all of her grandchildren very much.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Barnes, two sisters, and one brother.
