Officer saves woman, 88, from blaze

Benton Police Officer Chris Goss is credited with saving an 88-year-old woman from a burning structure on Derby Circle.
Bruce Armstrong, fire marshal for the Benton Fire Department, said Goss crawled down a smoke-filled hallway to reach Jessie Mae Flowers, who was in bed in a rear bedroom of the structure at 2908 Derby Circle.
The fire was reported around 10:10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 26, during a period when many local residences were without electrical power.
Upon entering the structure, Goss "encountered thick, black heavy smoke, which had filled the house," Armstrong said.

When Mark William Orr entered the world on Jan. 2, he became a celebrity.
The infant is Saline Memorial Hospital's first baby of 2013.
Mark William is the son of Chad and Krista Orr of Malvern.
According to Rebecca Jones, director of marketing and community relations, he weighed 10 pounds and 2 ounces and was 22 inches long when his birth occurred at 12:46 p.m.
"This is Krista's fourth baby and all have been born at Saline Memorial Hospital," Jones said.
Dr. Kim Smith delivered the child, she added.

Mackey Louis Spivey

Mackey Louis Spivey, 75, of Benton passed away Monday, Dec. 31. He was born Dec. 19, 1937. in Havana.
Mackey was a U.S. Air Force veteran. He retired from Alcoa after 30 years and was a member of Trinity Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Audice Spivey and Mae Frazier Spivey; and two sisters, Laquita Scott Baxley and Bettye Brown Knopp.

Harmon D. Matthews

Harmon D. Matthews, 88, of Benton passed away Tuesday, Jan. 1.  He was born June 6, 1924, in Donaldson to the late Frank and Eva Mae Matthews.
He was a War World II Army veteran and won the Bronze Star and Oak Leaf Cluster for heroism under fire. Mr. Matthews worked as a driver for Arkansas Best Freight for 30 years. Also, he was a Mason for 60 years.

Fr. Panthers rout Cards JV in tourney

BENTON – It is not too often that there is a basketball game played with two coaches with the same ties to both schools playing. But for Benton Freshmen Panthers and Harmony Grove Cardinals’ junior varsity, Wednesday’s opening-round match of the Benton Classic had just that.
First-year head coach Dexter Hendrix, a 2006 Benton graduate returned to the same floor that he played on as he led his team into the Benton Arena to battle Panther Head Coach David Torres. Torres was the longtime senior girl’s coach at Harmony Grove before moving to Benton in the early 2000s.

C. W. 'Bill' Golenor

C. W. “Bill” Golenor of Benton went to be with our Lord on Dec. 31, 2012. He was born on April 14, 1927, in Malvern, to the late Ernest and Lucille Golenor.  Mr. Golenor served in the Naval Air Corps in World War II.  He ran away from home to ride the ponies at Oaklawn at age 15. When World War II broke out, he wanted to serve his country and lied about his age and went in the Navy a year earlier than was legal.  He ended up as a waist gunner on a B-17 bomber serving in the Pacific.

Lethel Frank Slatton

Lethel Frank Slatton, 86, of Hot Springs, formerly of Benton, died Dec. 31, 2012. He was born in Murfreesboro on Nov. 7, 1926, to Benjamin Frank and Lesta Lala Slatton.
Frank was an educator who spent 35 years in Arkansas schools. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Hot Springs and a member of Doug and Patsy Ervin’s Sunday School Class.

Billy Keith Butts

January 3, 2013

Billy Keith Butts, 62, of Bauxite passed away Sunday, Dec. 30, 2012, at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center in Little Rock. He was born Dec. 5, 1950, in Hanna City, Ill., to the late James Butts and Marylin (Miller) Butts.
Bill was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He attended New Song Community Church in Benton. 
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, David Butts.
