AUGSBURG, Germany (AP) â€” It started with a routine check by German tax inspectors â€” and resulted in the discovery of an art hoard so vast and spectacular that no one yet knows how the story truly ends.
On a high-speed train from Zurich to Munich on Sept. 22, 2010, Germany's briskly polite officialdom was on the lookout for customs and tax cheats. Thousands of German citizens had bank accounts in Switzerland, many of them undeclared, and the route from Zurich was a prime target for those carrying substantial sums of cash.
A town hall meeting in Bauxite on Monday night was the focus of discussion regarding the cityâ€™s sewer system. Specifically, Mayor Johnny McMahan discussed ways to maintain sewer grinder pumps that each resident has at their home. A cleaned-up example of a sewer grinder pump that recently failed was used as a visual aid to illustrate the issue. McMahan has proposed a half-cent increase to the cityâ€™s sales tax to fund maintenance, repairs and operations of the sewer system in Bauxite. Gilbert Franklin Griffin, 69, of Traskwood, passed away on Saturday Nov. 2, 2013.Â He was born June 6, 1944, in Lake Village, to the late Gilbert Monroe Griffin and the late Madell Royal Griffin.
Gilbert was retired from Pulaski County Road and Bridge and was a Desert Storm veteran of the U.S. Army. He was a member of Temple Baptist Church and American Legion Post of Sheridan.
Marcus Shane Howell, 26, of Haskell went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013.
Shane was born Nov. 6, 1986, in Little Rock. He lived in Pine Bluff until age 9 when his family moved to Haskell.Â He graduated from Harmony Grove High School in 2005.Â
William "Bill" Earl Winder of Bryant passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2013, as a result of complications from a recent illness. He was 54 years old.
Bill was born Oct. 11, 1959, in Fayetteville, N.C. to Robert W. and Norma J. Winder.Â As a child, Bill took an early interest in all things mechanical.Â He very much enjoyed working on anything with wheels.
Bill spent the vast majority of his life in the automotive industry, most recently employed by Steve Landers Dodge and Frank Fletcher Dodge.Â
Merry Lu Barnett McLeod Tuggle, age 79, of Shannon Hills died Nov. 1 at Saline Memorial Hospice House.
She was born Nov. 22, 1933, in Spokane, Wash., and spent her childhood in Berkeley, Calif., before moving to Mulvane, Kan., as a teenager.Â After graduating from Mulvane High School, she married Don McLeod and went to work for Mulvane State Bank.
After they divorced in 1962, she raised her two daughters in Pittsburg, Kan., while working at the National Bank of Pittsburg.
Harvey Horace "J.R." Dodson, 64, of Benton, went to his Â home on Oct. 31, 2013. He was born August 27, 1949, in Benton to Harvie and Juanita Dodson. Those that knew J.R. know there are many stories to tell, but none other than the love he had for his family, childhood stories, and the days at deer camp or on the lake. For the time he was here, he left an impression on many and will be missed by many.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Edward Dodson; a sister, Lucy Kaye Dodgen; a sister-in-law, Sherry Dodson; and a grandson, Eric Daniels.
LOS ANGELES (AP) â€” A gunman armed with a semi-automatic rifle opened fire at the Los Angeles International Airport, killing a Transportation Security Administration employee and wounding two other people.
Tim Kauffman, a spokesman for the American Federation of Government Employees in Washington, confirmed Friday that a TSA officer was killed.
He says the union's information comes from their local officials in Los Angeles.
The attack frightened passengers and disrupted flights nationwide.
Jimmy L. Reeves, 78, of Avilla went to be with the Lord on Oct. 30, 2013. He was a member of Moose Lodge 2556 and loved wrestling and shuffleboard.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John Avery Reeves and Mattie Moxen; a brother, John E. Reeves; a daughter, Kim Bray; two sons, Brent Reeves and Robert Bramlett; and a grandson, Jeremy Grafe.
Janice Annette Shelton, 37, of Tull passed away Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013, at her home.
She was born July 10, 1976, in Saline County to Walter Griffin and the late Eula Jean Turner Griffin.
Mrs. Shelton was a homemaker and a retired cashier service manager for Walmart.Â She was a member of Brooks Bethel Missionary Baptist Church where she was active in the Childrenâ€™s Ministry.
In addition to her mother, she was preceded in death by one brother, Walter Wayne Griffin; and two nephews, Christopher Lewis and Walter Ammons.
