LITTLE ROCK - For a team that is built like a powerhouse and an offensive force to be reckoned with, the Harmony Grove Cardinals took a different approach to its game on Thursday night. Playing in the quarterfinals of the 5-3A district tournament in Little Rock, the Cardinals took Head Coach Dexter Hendrix’s game plan and executed it flawlessly, beating Fountain Lake 33-27 to advance to the semis today against Episcopal.
FORT SMITH – After both the Benton boys and girls bowling teams finished second to Cabot in the 7A/6A Central conference tournament, Benton went to Bowling World in Fort Smith for the 7A/6A State Tournament on Monday. The Panther girls took third place and the boys fourth, while Cabot boys and girls took first in state as well. Bentonville came in second for the girls, and Fayetteville and Mountain Home were the teams before the Benton boys.
Rebecca Lynn "Becky" McAtee, 63, of Benton passed away Tuesday, Feb. 12, at Arkansas Hospice in Little Rock. She was born Oct. 15, 1949, in Charleston, W. Va., to Peggy Frances Thompson and the late Gordon William Thompson.
Mrs. McAtee received a bachelor' degree in medical technology from West Virginia University and worked at St. Vincent Infirmary as a medical technologist. She was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church, where she served as a eucharistic minister and sacristan and was a member of The Daughters of Charity.
DeLena Peterson, 92, of Bauxite passed away Feb. 13. She was born April 5, 1920, in the Shaw Community to the late James Albert and Anna Mae Brazil Kentner. Delena attended West Bauxite Missionary Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 73 years, John T. Peterson; three sisters, Sophie Miller, Emma Whitfield and Imogene Thurston; and four brothers, James Kentner, John Kentner, Jeff Kentner and Joe Kentner.
Phyllis Rickard Peters, 73, of Benton passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 12. She was born Jan. 10, 1940 in Paron.
Phyllis graduated from Benton High School in 1957 and went on to get her master's degree in education. She was a retired teacher and reading specialist in Louisiana, and was employed as a tutor by the Boys & Girls Club of Saline County. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Ringgold, La. She also was a member of the Louisiana Association of Educators, Caddo Association of Educators, and Pi Beta Phi.
Dennis Keith Smith, 62, of Sherwood formerly of Benton, passed away Monday, Feb. 11.
He was preceded in death by his father, Leon Rush Smith.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Judy Clayton Smith; two sons and daughters-in-law, Keith Allen and Kris Smith of Sherwood, Chad Clayton and Sarah Smith of Bentonville; four grandsons, Grant, Trent, Ben and Ethan Smith; his mother, Dorothy Smith Jones of Benton; two brothers, Lonnie Smith of White Hall and Travis Smith of Benton; two sisters, Reba Miller of Albuquerque, N.M., and Kay McCardle of Phoenix, Ariz.
Franklin Gale Bivins, 78, of Little Rock went to be with the Lord Feb. 11.
Gale was born Jan. 26, 1935, in Roland to Ebenezer and Edna Bivins. He worked for 21 years as a diesel mechanic at Roadway Express. Gale enjoyed gardening, woodworking and tinkering with cars.
His favorite holiday was Christmas and he loved spending time with his children and grandchildren Gale was a member of Family Church in Bryant.Â
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister; Edna Carolyn Studer.Â
Barbara O’Niece Horn, 70, passed away February 12. She was born January 24, 1943 in Benton. Barbara loved to read and enjoyed working crossword puzzles. She retired as a LPTN from Benton Service Center. She was dearly loved by all who knew her and will be missed greatly.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Ray Horn, and her parents, Roland and Bonnie Wilson.
Mary G. Burdick, 81, of Benton passed away February 11.
She was born Sept. 4, 1931, in Houston, Texas, to George and Isabell Fields.
She was a member of the Legion of Mary at St. Jerome Catholic Church in Kenner, La. Mary also attended Our Lady of Perpetual Help and St. Matthew's Catholic Churches. In her adult life she was active in the Girl Scouts and enjoyed going camping with the girls. She loved all children.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents; and her brothers, Angeles and Nick Fields. Â
Ellen Deon Turner Anderson, 68, of Adona passed away Saturday, Feb. 9. She was born in North Little Rock, a daughter of Ceril Quinton and Jewell Vivinell Harrell Turner. She was a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.
She is survived by her husband, James Edward Anderson; two daughters, Wanda Vick of Benton and Sylvia Paxton of Benton; three sisters, Alice Weeks of Beebe, Catherine Hobby of Benton and Charlotte Burgess of Vimy Ridge; and four stepchildren, Christine Offield of Harris Brake, James Henry Anderson of Adona and Karry Anderson of Greenbrier.Â
