It was taco soup to the finish line for First Security Bank.
For the third consecutive year, the financial institution's taco-flavored soup took top honors at Habitat for Humanity of Saline County's "Souper Bowl" cookoff.
Jerry Ponder and Kaycee Wright of First Security operated the bank's booth where they collected the biggest financial return for the event.
"They raised over $300 at that booth," said Amy Bennett, associate director of the chapter.
The booth winner was determined based on the total amount of money collected in each team’s tip jar.
Charlotte S. Freeze, 68, of Benton, went to be with the Lord Sunday, Feb. 3. She was born Sept. 9, 1944. in Benton.
She was a homemaker and a member of Highland Heights Baptist Church in Benton.
Charlotte loved everything about nature, which included spending time outdoors camping, fishing, and gardening, both vegetables and flowers. She was very artistic and enjoyed reading a variety of books. What Charlotte enjoyed most was spending time with her grandkids teaching them about nature and gardening.
She was preceded in death by her father, Carmon Hulsey.
Mary C. Glymph Edwards, 87, of Benton was born in Grapevine on July 29, 1925, to the late Anderson C. and Emma Mays Glymph
In her early years she moved to Berkley, Calif., where she met and married Johnny Edwards. They later moved to Detroit, Mich., where she was employed with Ford Motor Co. for over 30 years. Upon her retirement she moved to Oakland, Calif., and then to Benton where she united with Johnson Street Church of Christ.Â
James Lee Deaton, 52, of Benton passed away on Feb. 1. He was born in Baton Rouge, La., on March 11, 1960, to the late Ray and Ruby Mae Deaton. James was a plant manager for Hascall Steel for 28 years. He loved hunting and fishing and working in his garden.
Mr. Deaton was preceded in death by both parents; one brother, Richard Deaton; one daughter, Tracy Walker Fullington; and one grandson, infant Josh Fullington.
Alesa Renee Smith, 22, of Benton passed away Friday, Feb. 1, in Woodward, Okla., while serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Alesa graduated from Glen Rose High School and was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
BENTON – Despite a less-than-stellar performance, the Benton Panthers came away with a 50-44 victory over the Sheridan Yellowjackets in 7A/6A South conference play on Tuesday night in Benton Arena. It was the Panthers’ 12th consecutive victory and Benton is ranked seventh in the state in the Hog Country Top 10 poll.
“I did not think we played well at all tonight,” Benton Coach Chris Nail said. “We had dead legs all night. We didn’t have our usual motion. Sheridan played good. You can’t say it was all us, but I didn’t think we played well.
GLEN ROSE - When the month of February rolls around, there is just one thing on the mind of high school basketball teams; postseason play. For the Harmony Grove Cardinals, the 5-3A 2012-13 district tournament looms in the near future.
On Tuesday, the Cardinals traveled just up the street to Glen Rose for an intense rivalry-renewing game with the Beavers. After busting a four-game skid with a win over eStem on Friday, Harmony Grove added a second straight win Tuesday, defeating Glen Rose handily, 75-55.
BRYANT – Sophomore K.J. Hill poured in 20 points, Greyson Giles added 10, but their efforts fell short as the Bryant Hornets fell to the visiting Little Rock Fair War Eagles 56-48 on Tuesday night.
Despite outscoring Fair 38-35 in the second half, Bryant Head Coach Mike Abrahamson said his team wasn’t ready from the opening tip.
“We didn’t want this one for some reason,” Abrahamson said. “We weren’t ready to play.”

Willis Wayne Felton, 76, of Bryant passed away Feb. 1. He was born Dec. 6, 1936, in Carter, Okla., to the late Willis Felton and Lois Mikles.
He was a member of First United Methodist Church of Bryant.
Wayne was a retired medical technician for the Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System. After retiring, he started his own backflow system inspection business. He was a member of Gorman Hunting Club, enjoyed spending time with friends and family on Lake Ouachita, and was a longtime fan of the Arkansas Razorbacks, Dallas Cowboys and NASCAR, as well as a hot rod enthusiast.
Leta Lynn Carroll, 71, of Hot Springs passed away Feb. 1 at her home. She was born Aug. 8, 1941, to the late O. T. and Juanel (Wilson) McCullough in Austin, Texas.
She graduated from Travis High School in Austin, Texas, and worked as a deputy clerk at Saline County District Court.
She spent a decade at the sewing machine making uniforms for the Eastside Junior High drill team and cheerleaders and the Benton High School Pep Steppers and cheerleading teams.
