Sheriff's office searches for stolen equipment

July 10, 2013

The Saline County Sheriff's Office is asking for assistance in locating a stolen piece of construction equipment.
The 2012 Case skid steer was stolen from a construction site on Narrows Road around July 4.
Anyone with information on the location of the equipment or any other information regarding the theft may contact that Criminal Investigation Division at 501-303-5608.

Dorothy Ditzig

Dorothy Ditzig of Benton died peacefully on July 8, 2013 at Saline Memorial Hospice. She was 79 and had lived at Fox Ridge Senior Living for several years.
She was a member of Holland Chapel Baptist Church in Benton.

Willie O. Shelnut

July 10, 2013

Willie O. Shelnut, 86, of Benton died July 8, 2013.
She was born April 15, 1927, in Delight to the late Mate and Mettie Pipkins. She retired from the Benton Services Center and was of the Baptist faith.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded by her husband, Hershel A. Shelnut; one son, Russell A. Shelnut; four brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by a son, Dowayne Shelnut and wife Diane of Benton; three grandsons, Eric Shelnut and wife Stacye, Kirk Shelnut and Jason Shelnut; and eight great-grandchildren.

Darrell L. Ray

On Saturday, July 6, 2013, Darrell L. Ray, 74, passed from this world to the next. He was born on Nov. 30, 1938 in, San Francisco, Calif.
Darrell was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Germany during the early 1960s. In 1991, he retired as a successful building contractor. He loved golf and bowling. He once had a hole-in-one and a 300 game in the same week. He was a Senior All Star Bowler of the year in 1998.

2013 Caldecott honoree to entertain children, advise adults

Peter Brown, an award-winning children's author and illustrator, will read stories and provide a drawing demonstration for children Thursday, July 18 at both Saline County Library locations.
Children’s programs will occur at 10:30 a.m. at Boswell Library and at 2 p.m. at Herzfeld Library.
A program for ages 18 and up will be held at 6 p.m. at Herzfeld Library. Brown will discuss the creative process, the publishing industry, and tips on how to best pursue publication.

Benton holds on for victory

BENTON – Benton McClendon Appliances rallied late and held on to win 11-9 against Jacksonville Gwatney Chevrolet on Bill Perry Field at Bernard Holland Park on Saturday.
“We just fought through,” Benton Coach Brandon Wake said. “We just talked to them and told them we have seen this pitcher twice now and it’s time to go to work. I’d like to improve on getting ahead in the count. We’re going to work on [it].”

Trial set for woman accused of cattle theft in Ashdown

ASHDOWN — A trial is scheduled for next week for an Oklahoma woman accused of stealing cattle in southwest Arkansas.

Wendi Cox appeared in court Tuesday in Ashdown where she waived her right to a trial by jury. Shreveport, La., television station KSLA reports that Cox is scheduled for a bench trial beginning Monday.

Cox is already serving a 60-year prison sentence after she was convicted in March of stealing five rodeo team horses and equipment from Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia.

Boston bombing suspect heads to 1st public court hearing

BOSTON — Survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing will watch as the young man who could face the death penalty for the attack appears in court for the first time since he was found bleeding and hiding in a boat in a suburb days after the April 15 explosion.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's arraignment was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon in federal court in Boston. He has been charged with using a weapon of mass destruction in the bombings that killed three people and wounded more than 260.
