Man threatens own life; Edison Ave. shut down temporarily

Police responded earlier this afternoon to a man threatening to harm himself parked in Trinity Baptist Church parking lot on Edison Avenue in Benton.
Authorities managed to negotiate with the man, and everything ended peacefully, according to Lt. Kevin Russell of the Benton Police Department.
The man reportedly went with police to seek help.
A portion of Edison Avenue was closed for a short time because of the incident.

Humane Society temporary shelter for 95 animals rescued from property

Ninety-five cats and dogs — many in urgent need of veterinary attention — were rescued from a property in White County, after authorities discovered them living in filth and suffering from a lack of basic care.
Arkansas State Police called in The Humane Society of the United States and other area and national organizations, including the Humane Society of Saline County, Central Arkansas Rescue Efforts for Animals, and RedRover to assist in the rescue and removal the animals.
Many of the animals reportedly were suffering from respiratory problems as well as skin, eye and ear conditions.

Wildfires still a threat in Saline County

The Arkansas Forestry Commission has released the Wildfire Situation Report for today, and the district in which Saline County falls is at the highest risk of wildfire in the state.
Saline County is still under a burn ban.
"Looks like the rain didn't help us," said Bryant Fire Chief J.P. Jordan.
There is still a chance of rain tonight and tomorrow, however, according to the National Weather Service.

Ruling sought in Arkansas abortion ban lawsuit

LITTLE ROCK — Attorneys for two Little Rock abortion providers are asking a federal judge to strike down a new Arkansas law that bans most abortions 12 weeks into a pregnancy.

Lawyers with the American Civil Liberties Union of Arkansas and the Center for Reproductive Rights filed their request for summary judgment on Friday.

They're also asking U.S. District Judge Susan Webber Wright to issue a permanent injunction that prevents the law from being enforced. Wright already granted a temporary injunction while the lawsuit is pending.

Settlement reached in marijuana machine suit

LITTLE ROCK — A federal judge has dismissed a defamation lawsuit filed by a company that makes medical marijuana dispensing machines against a conservative Arkansas group after both sides reached a settlement.

U.S. District Judge James Moody on Wednesday dismissed the lawsuit that Medicine Dispensing Systems Inc. filed against the Family Council Action Committee and its president, citing the settlement.

Indiana Jones Adventure set for today at library

An Indiana-Jones-themed party will wrap up the summer reading program at Herzfeld Library in Benton today.

Predicted rain might not cool down weather

Although rain is predicted for this weekend, it won't likely cool temperatures down much, according to the National Weather Service.
In fact, Saline is one of 45 counties the NWS is warning will experience uncomfortable high temperatures from now at least until Tuesday.
High temperatures combined with a humid air mass will push the heat index up to about 100 degrees each afternoon, according to the NWS.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms also are expected through the period.
