What happens while you're making other plans

July 24, 2013

By Jennifer Joyner

I remember my mother’s 32nd birthday pretty well. This is partly because she — sweet lady that she is — kept the birthday card my brother and I made her hanging on her bedroom wall for several years.
It was a large card, made with poster board instead of paper.
It featured a picture I drew of my mother with a humongous cake.
The only parts of her that were visible in the drawing were her legs behind the huge cake, and there was a little caption bubble that read: “Who turned out the lights???”

Ark. lawmakers to meet to discuss death penalty

July 24, 2013

LITTLE ROCK — The head of Arkansas' prison system is expected to meet with legislators to talk about executions after the state's top lawyer said the current death penalty system is broken.

Department of Correction Director Ray Hobbs is to appear before the House and Senate Judiciary Committees on Wednesday.

The state hasn't executed an inmate since 2005 and Attorney General Dustin McDaniel said earlier this month that he doesn't expect that to change anytime soon. His recent remarks come as Arkansas grapples with legal challenges and a shortage of drugs used in lethal injections.

NOTICE: Burn ban lifted

July 24, 2013

The burn ban in Saline County has been lifted, according to County Judge Lanny Fite.
The area received about an inch of rain Tuesday afternoon and evening, which brought up the soil moisture level, the deciding factor in determining drought conditions.
High temperatures and lack of rain contributed to wildfire danger that necessitated the ban, which had been in effect since Monday, July 8.
