Severe thunderstorm warning in effect

The National Weather Service in Little Rock has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for several areas in central Arkansas, including southern Saline County.
The storm is capable of producing quarter-sized hail and damaging winds in excess of 60 mph.
This storm was located 6 miles west of Benton, and moving Southwest at 15 mph at 1:55 p.m.
Locations impacted include Benton, Traskwood, Rockport, Lonsdale and Haskell.
This includes Interstate 30 between mile markers 96 and 121.
The warning is in effect until 2:45 p.m.

NOTICE: Severe thunderstorm watch in effect

The National Weather Service is calling for a severe thunderstorm watch for the Saline County area.
The hazardous weather watch is in effect until further notice.

Part of Boone Road closed today

July 23, 2013

The portion of Boone Road west of Tanglewood Street in Bryant will be closed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today.
All westbound traffic will be detoured from Tanglewood Street to Boswell Road. All eastbound traffic will be detoured from Woodland Park Road to Boswell Road.
Workers will be adding culverts to improve the drainage in the area, according to the street department.

B Town Salt-Bowl-a-Thon set for Aug. 9

The second annual B Town Salt-Bowl-a-Thon is set for Friday, Aug. 9. at Enterprise Lanes in Benton.
Put on this year by the Bryant Area Chamber of Commerce, the event is a gathering of all Saline County residents.
“The idea is for one office to challenge another office or branch in another Saline County town, or for one competitor to challenge another competitor in another town,” said Julie Roltsch, chairman for the event.

Ark. AG rejects wording of medical marijuana plan

LITTLE ROCK — Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel has rejected the wording of a proposed initiated act that would legalize medical marijuana in the state.

McDaniel rejected the proposal in an opinion on Monday that says the proposal by Arkansans for Responsible Medicine contains ambiguities.

McDaniel's opinion says the proposed measure isn't clear enough about whether patients could grow their own marijuana at home. The opinion also says there's contradictory language in the proposal regarding nonprofit dispensaries.

Opponents ask Ark. to drop Common Core

LITTLE ROCK — Opponents of a set of uniform benchmarks for reading, writing and math that have been fully adopted in most states asked Arkansas lawmakers Monday to back out of the standards, saying the plan takes away the state's control over its classrooms.

Teachers, parents and national groups opposed to the Common Core standards urged lawmakers to drop the benchmarks as a legislative panel opened a two-day long hearing. Arkansas is among 45 states that have adopted the standards, which will be fully implemented in the state by the 2014-2015 school year.

Gertrude Alonda Springer, 94. of Benton passed away July 17, 2013. She was born May 5, 1919, to Oliver Theodore (OT) and Alice Brown Wimberley in Recto.
She lived briefly in Litchfield, Ill., and later moved with her family to Jonesboro, where she met and married William Augustus Springer of Shannon, Miss. They moved to Benton in 1942.

David Thomas Moreland

David Thomas Moreland, 65, of Benton passed away at his home on Thursday, July 18, 2013.
He was born Sept. 2, 1947, in East St. Louis, Ill., to the late Harold and Marge Thomas Moreland.
Mr. Moreland operated his own insurance agency in Bryant and was a member of First United Methodist Church in Benton.
 David’s favorite moments involved doing anything with his three grandchildren, watching sports, and spending time with family and friends on the lake at the houseboat.

Duffie Carroll Addie, 66, of Waskom, Texas, passed away Wednesday, July 17, 2013. 
He was born Dec. 8, 1946, in Little Rock.
Mr. Addie was a truck driver. 
He was preceded in death by his parents, Judge Duffie Addie and Leonia Madaline Addie; two sisters, Birdia Mae “Bea” Dodson and Rose Lee Keller; and two nephews, Robert Young and Steven Dewayne Dodson.

Zackery 'Zack' Brandon Massey

Zackery “Zack” Brandon Massey, 25, of Benton, passed away July 17, 2013.  He was born March 31, 1988, in Little Rock to Dean and Connie Massey. 
He was preceded in death by his mother, Connie Massey; his paternal grandmother, Betty Massey; and his maternal grandfather, Ernest Polster.
Zack is survived by his father, Dean Massey; his grandfather, Bill Massey; his girlfriend, Heather; his adoptive mother, Carol Welch Massey; his half-sister, Charli Atkins; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, July 20, at Ashby Funeral Home.
