The National Weather Service in Little Rock has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for south central Saline County until 8:15 p.m.

From the Shannon Hills Public Works Manager, David Passmore:
The July 29 "Precautionary Boil Water Notice" is hereby rescinded following the repair, an adequate disinfectant level has been established throughout the distribution system and the satisfactory completion of the bacteriological survey shows that the water is safe to drink.

Benton, Bryant youth to join forces for benefit bike race

While it's common for competitions to take place pitting area school groups against each other — particularly for athletic events — youth organizations from three communities have decided to join together for a common cause.
Members of the Mayor's Youth Advisory Councils from the cities of Benton, Bryant and Haskell are joining forces for a bike race that will benefit The Care Center in Benton.
The race is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 14.

Everett blanks Gwatney, advances to final

BRYANT – The Bryant Everett Black Sox advanced to the championship game with an 11-0 win over Jacksonville Gwatney on Monday in the American Legion Junior Regional Tournament at Bryant Hornet Field. Bryant moves on to face Texarkana, Texas, for the tournament championship needing just one more win to secure the title.
“This might have been the best team win all year long,” Bryant Coach Tyler Brown said. “We came out and we hit the ball well and had a plan at the plate. [We] played great defense which is always a plus and had great pitching. Great team win.”

Bryant Everett gets help in rout

BRYANT – The Bryant Everett Black Sox took advantage of 10 walks and seven errors in an 11-2 win over the Atlanta, Texas, Rebels on Saturday morning in the American Legion Junior Regional Tournament at Bryant High School.
Despite four errors and two unearned runs allowed, the Rebels were down just 3-2 after five and a half innings, but walks and errors came back to haunt Atlanta once again. Dalton Holt led the bottom of the fifth off with a single to left field, reached third on two wild pitches and scored on a passed ball to make it 4-2.

UPDATE: Pursuit ends with officer-involved shooting

A pursuit with Benton police this afternoon ended in an officer-involved shooting, where the suspect died at the scene.
About 3 p.m., detectives observed the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Clifford Jones, in the area of Gattin Road and Madison Village and attempted to perform a traffic stop.
Jones reportedly refused to pull over for officers, driving quickly on Gattin Road toward Alcoa Road and then onto Interstate 30.

BREAKING: Police chase results in I-30 eastbound being shut down

A chase between Benton police and a fleeing suspect has traffic backed up on Interstate 30 eastbound.
The chase originated on Benton Parkway.
More details will be released soon, according to Lt. Kevin Russell.

Rev. Harold Herman Spence

The Rev. Harold Herman Spence, 94, of Searcy passed away Monday, July 29, 2013.  He was born Sept. 20, 1918, in Cushman, to the late Albert Herman Spence and Lottie Masters Spence.
The Rev. Spence served full time as an ordained minister in the United Methodist Church in Arkansas for more than 40 years. In retirement, he served for an additional 10 years in the Searcy area and as pastor emeritus o First United Methodist Church in Searcy.

Daisy Esta Mae Spears Smith

Daisy Esta Mae Spears Smith, born June, 1953, died July 26, 2013. She was 60.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Willie O. Spears and Daisy Mae Graves Spears; her sisters, Louise Golden, Texanna Herron and Billy Ruth Dodd; and a brother, Tillman Spears.

Peggy Jean Pelton

Peggy Jean Pelton, 84, of Benton passed away Sunday, July 28, 2013.  She was born Dec. 25, 1928, in Tulip.
Mrs. Pelton sold Avon for 42 years and to her credit she knitted 77 prayer shawls. She loved animals and cooking. Mrs. Pelton was known for her peanut brittle, coffee cakes and pecan pies.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William and Viola Lea; and her brother, William Lea Jr.
She is survived by three sons, Gary Pelton and wife Robin, David Randall Pelton and wife Cindy and Russell L. Pelton and wife Linda; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
