Sheriff says retirement decision is best for him, wife

Saline County Sheriff Bruce Pennington announced this afternoon he will be giving up his office and retiring on Oct. 1.
Pennington came under scrutiny after being charged with public intoxication and resisting arrest in conjunction with a June 29 incident at Denton's Trotline.
"My wife and I have been discussing this and we decided it was the right thing to do," Pennington said. "I am not going to take a long break. The first thing I am going to do is get out and look for a job."

Obama weighs 'limited and narrow' Syria action

WASHINGTON — Edging toward a retaliatory strike, President Barack Obama said Friday he is weighing "limited and narrow" action against Syria as the administration bluntly accused Bashar Assad's government of launching a chemical weapons attack that killed at least 1,429 people — far more than previous estimates — including more than 400 children.

No "boots on the ground," Obama said, seeking to reassure a public weary after a decade of war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Lady Panthers fall in cat fight

CONWAY – The Benton Lady Panthers came out of the gates hot, but fell 3-1 to the Conway Lady Wampus Cats in Conway on Thursday night. Benton took the first set 25-18 before Conway returned the favor in the second set with a 25-18 win of its own, and won the last two sets 25-19 and 25-16.
“They’re very competitive,” Benton Coach Brandy Chumley said of Conway. “It was a good team to play to see where our weaknesses are and what we need to work on to try to get us ready for our conference play. They’re a very good team.”

Pennington to retire

Amid controversy over his June 29 arrest, Saline County Sheriff Bruce Pennington has resigned from office, effective Oct. 1.

Edna D. James

August 30, 2013

Edna D. James, 75, of Alexander passed away Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2013, at Saline Memorial Hospice House in Bryant.
She was born May 9, 1938, in Pine Bluff to the late Walter C. and Hazel Paralee White McGrew.
Mrs. James was retired. She was a Jehovah’s Witness.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one son, Johnny C. Davis Jr.

Linda Patrick Fleury

August 30, 2013

Linda Patrick Fleury, 65, of Benton died Wednesday, Aug. 21, 2013.
She was born in Two Harbors, Minn., on Jan. 6, 1948, to the late Milo and Astrid Rootness Patrick.
Linda had worked in an administrative position for BCBS and General Mills for 16 years before retirement. She loved to travel and take cruises and was an animal lover, especially her two dogs, Kieko and Skooter. 

Edwin E. Zoch

Edwin E. Zoch, 85, of Bryant died Monday, Aug. 26, 2013. 
He was born July 29, 1928, in Springfield, Ill., to the late Ernest Earl and Mary Murdaugh Zoch. He moved to Bryant at a young age and spent most of his life there.
His early days of radio took him to Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi before settling back at Bryant in the 1960s.  He retired from radio after 45 years, having spent the last 20 years as operations manager at KUAR/KLRE.
Mr. Zoch served as an alderman for the city of Bryant.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Erlene Zoch, in 2007.

Samuel Ronald 'Ron' Johnson

Samuel Ronald "Ron" Johnson, 70, of Bryant passed away on Aug. 24, 2013, surrounded by his loving family.
“My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever." (Psalm 73:26.)
He was born Sept. 4, 1942, in Rosebud to the late A.C. Johnson and Nellie Mae Edwards Johnson. Ron was a faithful Christian.

James Edgar 'Jimmy' Giles

James Edgar “Jimmy” Giles, 82, of El Dorado died Monday, Aug. 26, 2013, at his home. He was born June 21, 1931, in El Dorado to Edgar William and Mattie Faye Giles.
He was a decorated veteran of the Korean War while proudly serving the U.S. Army.  He was a recipient of the Silver Star, two Purple Hearts, the Good Conduct Medal, the Meritorious Unit Commendation, the National Defense Service Medal, the Korean Service Medal, and the United Nations Service Medal.
He was married to Doris Marie Clift in 1955 and they had three daughters.

Elsie Marie (Johnson) Lawrence

Elsie Marie (Johnson) Lawrence, 84, of Benton, was born June 30, 1929, and passed away Aug. 26, 2013. 
Mrs. Lawrence lived in Benton all her life. She was married to Herbert (Shorty) Lawrence Sr.  Elsie attended school in Benton and later opened her own business, Lawrence Upholstery for over 30 years. She was a member of Holland Chapel Church.
Elsie had many hobbies. She loved spending time with her family and was an avid bingo player. She loved to crochet and, as any Lawrence, she loved to fish.  All of her friends called her Elsie, but to most she will be remembered as Nan.
