Local woman helps slavery victims

Caitlin Bennett hasn't found a job since she completed her degree in the spring of 2012. Actually, she hasn't been looking. The 23-year-old decided to follow her calling instead.
On Sept. 30, she returns to Southeast Asia to help victims of abuse, forced labor, illegal detentions, sexual violence and human trafficking.

Bauxite School Board meets Monday night

The Bauxite School Board will meet at 7 p.m on Sept. 30 in the Middle School Professional Development Room.
A reception to recognize retiring board members will begin at 6:30 p.m.
The agenda for the regular meeting includes:
- Reorganization of the board and a welcome for new member Michael Vocque.
- Approval of monthly expenditures.
- A revenue and expenditure report made this year through Aug. 2013, in various categories, will be reviewed by board members.
- The current student count for the district will be reviewed.

Kenneth Dale Rogers

Kenneth Dale Rogers, 58, passed away Sept. 25, 2013. Kenneth was born on May 17, 1955 in Houston, Texas.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his father, Harold Rogers.
Kenneth is survived by his son; Christopher Rogers of Texas; mother, Ann McClanahan of Little Rock; sister, Nancy Short and husband Cecil of Little Rock; brother, Ron Rogers and wife Judy of Benton, as well as other family members and friends who loved him dearly and will miss him always.

Ola Merle Russell

Ola Merle Russell, 92, of Alexander passed away Wednesday Sept. 25, 2013. She was born Aug. 26, 1921 in Dallas County. Ola was a retired nurse and a member of Benton First Assembly of God Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Gaston and Dessie Rucker Eubanks; husband, John H. Russell; a son, John S. Russell; two brothers and three sisters.
She is survived by son, Michael Russell; sister, Jane Gill; five grandchildren, Jason Russell, Brent Russell, Brian Russell, Rodney Russell and Jeremy Russell; ten great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

Gracie Louise Owens

Gracie Louise Owens, 51 of Ola, met her Savior at Heaven's gates on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013 to join her parents, the late Freddy Owens and the late Carolyn Mason. She was born Nov. 20, 1961 in Danville and cherished her membership at Ard Community Baptist Church. Gracie loved to crochet, read Danielle Steele books and watch her grandchildren play sports. Most of all she was a proud mother and grandmother who cherished her family dearly.
She is preceded in death by her parents.

Paul Gary Hatley

September 27, 2013

Paul Gary Hatley, 67, of Sherwood, formerly of Monticello, passed away Sept. 23, 2013, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock.  He was born May 13, 1946, in Enon to the late R.V. and Earlene Jones Hatley.
He was a loving father and grandfather, a Farm Service Agent with the USDA for 20 years, a 1971 graduate of Arkansas A&M College (UAM) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, a second lieutenant in the Arkansas National Guard and was of the Assembly of God faith.

Maybell Vittatoe

Maybell Vittatoe, formerly of Benton, Ark., went home to glory on Sept. 17, 2013, in Phoenix, Ariz. She was born Feb., 14, 1933 to parents Tellis and Nannie May Robinson. She is survived by her three daughters and two sons.
Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013 at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Benton, Ark.

Ernest M. 'Tex' Phillips

September 27, 2013

Ernest M. “Tex” Phillips passed away Sept. 21, 2013. He was born May 24, 1919, in Tull. He was a sea-going Marine Corps veteran of Solomon Islands campaign.
He was a member and past commander of the VFW,. He was active in Masonic Orders and a past president of Lakewood Kiwanis Club. He wa active in local Republican politics.

Walter C. 'Pinky' Caldwell

Walter C. “Pinky” Caldwell, 86, of Bryant died Tuesday, Sept. 24, 2013.  He was born Nov. 3, 1926, in Lonsdale to the late Walter S. and Dora Moore Caldwell.
He retired as a dispatcher for Arkansas Power and Light Co. and served as a deacon at Temple Baptist Church.  Mr. Caldwell served in the U.S. Navy and was a 32nd-degree Master Mason. 
In addition to his parents, his loving wife of 57 years, Reba C. Caldwell, and 11 siblings also preceded him in death.

Military Road officially opened

September 27, 2013

A ribbon cutting ceremony marked the official opening of the northern section of Military Road in Benton. The section of road between Burger King and Interstate 30 has been widened and traffic patterns altered to decrease vehicle congestion and to open the area to commercial development.
The plan to widen the road began during the administration of former mayor Rick Holland.
