RUSSELLVILLE â€“ At the Russellville Cyclone cross country invitational Saturday, the Bryant Lady Hornets put six runners in the top 15 places, including Melinda Murdockâ€™s individual victory, to win the team championship. Â Bryant scored 35 points to dominate the field of 13 teams.Â Mt. St. Mary took runner-up with 63 points followed by LR Christian (87), Heber Springs (120), Conway (144), and Russellville (166). Â There were 143 indivdual finishers in the race. Â This makes two team championships on the year for Bryant who took the OBU title earlier in the season.
Frank D. Snodgrass, 65, of Benton passed away Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, in North Little Rock. He was born Feb. 11, 1948, in Charleston, W.Va., to the late Merle Cornelius and Helen (Huffman) Snodgrass.
Mr. Snodgrass was of Baptist faith and was a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Vietnam. He worked at Reynolds Metals; was an employee of the Benton Police Department, having served as a sergeant in the criminal investigation division; and also was a postal clerk with the U.S. Postal Service.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son, Bertrum Dominic Snodgrass.
Virginia M. Maynard, 76, of Benton passed away Sept. 28, 2013. She was born March 4, 1937, in Pennsylvania.
Virginia was a housewife.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Mary Ann Lowther Volpe; a son, Rex E. Maynard; a brother, James Volpe; and three grandchildren, Jared, Julie and Jennifer Miller.
On Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, Barbara R. Grissom Atchison of Benton departed this world for her heavenly home. She was born Aug. 21, 1929, to Wade and Vuda Grissom in Bauxite.
She was a valued member of the community and had served on the board of directors for Saline County Habitat for Humanity, the Benton Senior Adult Center and Churches Joint Council on Human Needs.
She had served as CJCOHN food chairman for many years. In 1999 she and husband Ken were recognized as Outstanding Citizens of the Year by the Benton Chamber of Commerce.
Jeremy Duane Lawson, 19, of Alexander passed away Sept. 25, 2013, in Oklahoma as a result of injuries suffered in a motorcycle accident.
He was born Feb. 11, 1994, in Little Rock to Douglas Lawson Jr. and Melanie Johnson Travis.
Jeremy was a traveler.Â He traveled across country by foot and by motorcycle, enjoying whatever life dealt him along the way. His passing will leave a huge void in the hearts of those who loved him.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Buddy Lawson.
Mrs. Elsie Stanley Allison, 80, of Mayflower, died Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock.
Mrs. Allison was a native of Ashley County and a resident of Mayflower since 1979. She graduated from Fountain Hill High School in 1950.
She worked for Safeway/Harvest Foods for 30 years and she was a member of the Arkansas Association of Business Women, a member of the Eden Baptist Church and an avid Razorback fan.
Herman Higdon, 88, of Malvern passed away Thursday, Sept. 26, 2013. Herman was born April 17, 1925, in Sheridan to Morgan and Ella Higdon.
Herman was an integral part of renovating Malvern as the city's code enforcement officer for 13 years. Herman helped renovate Malvern City Hall, helped rebuild streets and pipelines, and became a part-time building inspector. He was also the community service director under the city manager and worked with five departments during this time.
William J. â€śBillâ€ť Edgin Sr., 46, of Roland, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2013. He was born Jan. 10, 1967, in Lawton, Okla.
William loved being a paramedic and helping people, along with being an avid hunter.
He was preceded in death by his father, Walter Ralph (Buddy) Edgin; and a sister, Tina Lontok.
Alvin Sales, 81, of Bauxite was born Dec. 10, 1931, and passed away Sept. 29, 2013.Â
The Salvation Army Central Arkansas Area Command began taking applications for the Christmas Assistance Ministry Program.
Children up to age 12 are eligible to apply for the program.
Parents wishing to apply can turn in application from 9:30 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1 p.m.-4 p.m. at 129 North Main St.
Applications will be accepted Oct. 1-4.
Parents should bring the following documents:
