Saline County is under a burn ban, effective today.
Saline County Judge Lanny Fite issued the ban this morning, after a lack of rain brought the county's drought index to 678 on Thursday afternoon, according to data from Arkansas Forestry Commission.
The Forestry Commission recommends enacting a burn ban when the drought index reaches more than 600.
This is the second burn ban issued in the county this year. The first was issued July 8 and lasted until July 17.
Mary Gail Wise, 71, of Benton, passed away September 5, 2013.Â She was born August 1, 1942Â in Benton, to the late Floyd and Lucille Moon Mason.Â Gail was a Registered Nurse for over 46 years and a member of Indian Springs Baptist Church.
Gail was survived by her husband of 46 years, Jerry Wise ofÂ Benton, daughters, Michelle Garcia and husband, Isidro of Bauxite, Stephanie Perciful and husband, Tim of Seattle, Washington, sister, Jean Taylor of Sheridan, grandchildren, Emily Sikes, Sara Sikes and Adrian Garcia.
The recent discovery of two rabid skunks in Haskell is something officials are taking seriously, said Mayor Jeff Arey.
"Because of this, we're encouraging people to get their pets vaccinated against rabies," he said. "Previously we've partnered with the Humane Society to hold rabies clinics, but we're putting more emphasis on this year's clinic."
The drive-through, low-cost clinic is scheduled from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, on the parking lot of Harmony Grove High School, 2621 Arkansas 229 in Haskell.
LITTLE ROCK â€“ The Benton golf team competed at par-36 First Tee golf course in Little Rock on Wednesday, with the girls taking four of the top five spots in winning the nine-hole match over Harding Academy and Evangel Collegiate, and the boys taking second (130) behind Harding Academy (120).
The match wasnâ€™t on the original schedule, but Benton Coach David Torres said the Panthers are trying to sneak matches in to get ready for the postseason.
Melanie Yvonne McElrath, 25, passed away Sept. 2, 2013. Melanie was born Aug. 12, 1988, in Little Rock. Melanie was a certified nursing assistant and was a student at Pulaski Technical College.
Melanie was preceded in death by her father, George Melton McElrath Jr.; and her grandfathers, Jerry Lee McGuire and George Melton McElrath Sr.
Imogene â€śJeanâ€ť Rounds, 85, of Alexander, born April 28, 1928, passed away Aug. 31, 2013.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Rounds; her parents, David and Cleo (Shrader) Muckelroy; her sisters, Nettie Onasch, Colleen Hudspeth, Lois Keith, Marie Muckelroy; anda brother, Herman Muckelroy.
Jean is survived by a daughter, Janet Caton; and a grandson, Jeffery Caton.
Graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at Pleasant Hills United Methodist Church in Alexander. Arrangements are by Arkansas Funeral Care

Lillie Mae Summers Bacus, 86, went to be with her Lord on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2013, surrounded by her family at Saline Memorial Hospice House in Bryant. Lillie was born Dec. 15, 1926, to the late James D. and Ruby Summers.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Charles F. Bacus, Sr.; her parents; a sister, Helen Bush; and two brothers, Cecil and Jackie Long.
Mary Carolyn Robinson, 72, of Donaldson died on Aug. 30, 2013, in Donaldson. She was born on Dec. 24, 2013, in Saline County, to the late Jones Lee and Pearl May Oglesby Davis. She worked as housekeeping supervisor for Days Inn and Holiday Inn Express. The thing she loved the most was her family. She also enjoyed singing, playing music and quilting. She loved her flowers and watching birds.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Merl Robinson; one daughter, Chrissy Phelps; and one son, Jerry Edward Robinson.
Syble E. Wear, 88, passed away Aug. 30, 2013, after a long battle with Parkinsonâ€™s Disease. She was born on April 29, 1925, in Perry County. Syble enjoyed sewing, canning vegetables and playing a variety of card games. When family would visit, you would often find the ladies on the back sun porch playing Rook and laughing into the early morning hours. When summer came, you would likely find her and Pop sitting on the swing, snapping or shelling beans in preparation for canning.
Johnnie Elmore Doddridge, 60, of Traskwood passed away Aug. 31, 2013. He was born March 31, 1953, in Saline County. Johnnie worked in the lab at the 3M Company and was a Baptist.
He was preceded in death by his father, Harry Robert Doddridge, and a special friend of the family, Joyce Corley.
