NORTH LITTLE ROCK – It was a battle, but the West No. 2 seed Bryant Hornet boys soccer team came away with a 1-0 victory over host North Little Rock Charging Wildcats in the quarterfinals of the 7A State Tournament on Friday. With the Hornets’ win, Bryant (20-2-1) played the Central No. 1 seed Fort Smith Northside Grizzlies at 2 p.m. on Saturday to determine which team will play for the 7A State Tournament Championship.
Against North Little Rock, senior Justin Travis scored four minutes into the game for the contest’s only score.
BENTON – After getting down 2-0 early in the quarterfinals of the 6A State Tournament to Russellville on Friday, the South No. 1 seed Benton Panthers scored 10 unanswered runs to win 10-2 to advance to the semifinals against the East No. 2 seed Jonesboro Golden Hurricane on Saturday. The Hurricane would jump on the Panthers for six runs in the first four innings, and though the Panthers fought back, Benton couldn’t finish the comeback falling 6-5 and wiping away the Panthers’ hopes for a matchup with Greenwood in the 6A State Championship at Baum Stadium in Fayetteville on Saturday.
SEARCY – The Benton Lady Panthers fought hard, but fell 4-0 to the Mountain Home Lady Bombers in the first round of the 6A State Tournament in Searcy on Thursday.
It was a scoreless game until the Lady Bombers struck with about four minutes left in the first half to take a 1-0 lead at halftime.
“The score is not a true indicator of the way the game was played,” Benton Coach Jason Gentry said. “ It was a very even, physical game. In the second half they pulled away because they could sub three to five girls at a time without much of a drop off in the talent.”

A federal judge said Wednesday that a challenge to Arkansas' new law banning most abortions 12 weeks into a pregnancy can proceed, rejecting the state's attempt to get the lawsuit dismissed.
U.S. District Judge Susan Webber Wright ruled that the lawsuit, which was brought by the American Civil Liberties Union of Arkansas and the Center for Reproductive Rights on behalf of two Little Rock abortion providers, made a strong enough case to warrant allowing it to go forward.
Free games, prizes and food will be available at Lyle Park for spectators at the finish line of the fifth annual Saline River Canoe Race on Saturday.
There's still time to register for the race, which will begin at 9:30 a.m. that day, but race organizer Michael Sacomani recommends those who want to sign up do so in the next couple of days.

Proceeds will benefit Second Chance Youth Ranch, a ministry of Family Church of Bryant that gives a home to abused, neglected or at-risk youth.
Patricia Ann Newcomb Larsen left this earth and entered heaven at 8:08 a.m. on May 13, 2013. Pat was born to Pat and Inez Newcomb on August 16, 1933 and was the oldest of six children, sisters, Theda White and Brenda Johnson, and brothers, Don, Gary and David Newcomb. They lived their childhood years in the Mountain View community of Saline County. Later, Pat and Inez opened Pat's Cafe on Hwy. 67 in Benton where they all worked to make the business a success.
Patricia was married on August 26, 1951 to W.D.
Bobbie Dean Warner, 70, of Little Rock went to be with her Lord with her family by her side on May 12, 2013. Bobbie enjoyed dancing and instructing senior citizens to dance. She also loved traveling all over the world.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Robert E. and Avonell Lee and one daughter, Vickie Dean Threlkeld.
She is survived by her three sons, Skip Warner and wife, Christy, Mike Warner, and Ricky Threlkeld, one daughter, Tina Renea Warner and numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
Charles Arthur Swap, 60, of Mabelvale passed away May 12, 2013. He was born May 12, 1953 in Macon, Missouri. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Edgar and Wilma Yarberry Swap.
He is survived by his fiancé of 10 years, Shari K. Wilson of Mabelvale, sisters, Joyce Bowlin and Donna McQuay.
Cremation was through Ashby Funeral Home. Memorial Services will be 1 p.m. Thursday, May 16 at Salem Cemetery in East End.

A Teddy Bear Sleepover for children of all ages is set for 6 p.m. Thursday at Herzfeld Library in Benton.
Attendees are encouraged to bring a teddy bear or stuffed animal to the library and enjoy a special storytime filled with stories, songs, games and prizes.
Among the activities will be a puppet show, teddy bear "bounce house" and a teddy bear dance party.
The Saline County Rummage Sale is set for Saturday at 10 a.m. in The Center at Bishop Park in Bryant.
The deadline to register for the sale has been extended to Thursday. Those interested in selling unwanted items may contact the parks department in Bryant at 501-943-0444.
Each 10x10 booth is $25, members of The Center of Bryant pay $15.
