NOTICE FROM CIRCUIT CLERK'S OFFICE: Jury orientation sessions canceled for Friday

The three jury orientation sessions scheduled for Friday has been postponed until Friday, December 13, 2013, Saline County Circuit Clerk Dennis Milligan and Circuit Judge Gary Arnold announced Wednesday.

The decision to delay the orientation sessions was made because of the winter storm watch in effect for central Arkansas starting Thursday, Milligan and Arnold said.

Toys for Tots Caravan event canceled

The Toys for Tots Caravan project that was set to leave Benton on Saturday has been canceled due to the chance of inclement weather.

Plans announced for 10th annual Toys for Tots project

The 10th annual Toys for Tots caravan will leave the Benton area on Dec. 7 en route for Toy Hill in North Little Rock.
George Beyers of George Beyers Co. is the local coordinator for the project.
Beyers said the event is open to "any and all antique, vintage, classic, exotic, hot rod, street rod, low rider, street machine cars, trucks and specialty vehicles."

Jimmey Dean Gross

Jimmey Dean Gross, 79, of Benton passed away on November 27, 2013. He was born on May 6, 1934 to the late, Jessie and Eana Gross in England, Arkansas. Jimmey loved to go fishing, playing cards and dominos and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Frankie Gross; one brother and one sister.

James Vernon Statler

James Vernon Statler, 82, of Atkins passed away Tuesday, Nov. 26, 2013, at his home. He was born Jan. 26, 1931, in Poplar Bluff, Mo., son of the late Carol Roscoe and Lottie Belle Casey Statler.
He was a Korean War veteran and a retired crane operator. He attended the Atkins Church of Christ.  In recent years, he was a loving caregiver for his wife of 57 years, Carolyn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Carol Eugene Statler; and a sister, June Lee Arquette.

Helen Louise Childress

Helen Louise Childress, 74, of Bryant went to be with her Lord on Nov. 24, 2013. with her family by her side.  She was born July 28, 1939, to the late Cleave and Viola Welch in England, Ark. Sister Childress was a true handmaiden of the Lord and worked alongside her pastor husband for more than 37 years.
She loved to fish, sing and cook and watch wrestling.  Her favorite memories were of time spent with her children and grandchildren.
Helen was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Barbara Bussell; and three brothers, Gene, Jesse and Ethridge Welch.

Tina Marie (Oliver) Wingate

Tina Marie (Oliver) Wingate, 46, of Bauxite passed away Sunday, Nov. 24, 2013 at Saline Memorial Hospital surrounded by her loving family.
Born May 23, 1967, to Doug and Doris Oliver in Bauxite, Tina was the younger of two children. She graduated from Bryant High School and was a member of the Stinger Steppers.
After graduation, Tina became an accomplished business woman with a successful career in banking.  Although she enjoyed success in business, nothing meant more to her than time spent with her family and friends.

Razorbacks to host only one game at War Memorial Stadium

The War Memorial Commission has announced that starting in 2014 season, the Arkansas Razorbacks will only host one game in War Memorial Stadium. Next year the only game in War Memorial will be when the Arkansas Razorbacks face the Georgia Bulldogs on Oct. 18.
A press conference is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. Nov. 26 at War Memorial Stadium.

Fire destroys home of Benton family

Fire destroyed the home of Cynthia and Minor George in Benton on Monday. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

George Stephen 'Steve' Gillespie

November 25, 2013

George Stephen "Steve" Gillespie of Benton passed away on Nov. 24, 2013.  He was born in Camden to the late Robert Charles and Evelyn Irene Gillespie.   Steve spent his life making a home for his family.  He treasured the time he spent with his wife, children and grandchildren.  He was retired from FedEx.

Raymond White

Brother Raymond White of Alexander, Ark., passed away Nov. 18, 2013.
A home-going service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 25, 2013, at Davis Creek Baptist Church in Prattsville, Ark.
Family hour is scheduled from 3 to 5 p.m. today (Sunday, Nov. 24) at the funeral home.
