One arrested after truck totaled at local railroad crossing

A Benton man was arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated Thursday night after his vehicle was struck by an Amtrak train.

Dustin Ashley, 24, told officers his vehicle, a 2006 Chevrolet SC1 truck, stalled on the railroad tracks at Gattin Road. Ashley attempted to push the vehicle off the tracks but was unable to do so before his vehicle was struck by a train.

The train engineer, Mark Nicholson told officers when he saw the vehicle, it was stalled on the tracks and the lights were off.

Local prosecutor gets railroad safety grant

Saline County Prosecuting Attorney Ken Casady recently received a $4,500 grant from Union Pacific Railroad.
Casady’s office applied for the grant through U.P. Cares safety program and the money will be used “in educating the public of dangers of trespassing on railroad property,” Casady said.

Casady’s office will also be teaming with Union Pacific Railroad police to enforce laws at railroad crossings and will conduct enforcement action with Union Pacific police to minimize vandalism of railroad property.
