Lady Backs upset No. 17 Kansas at Walton Arena

FAYETTEVILLE - Unbeaten 17th-ranked Kansas is unbeaten no more and apt to fall  in next  week's women's basketball rankings.
Unranked Arkansas upset the Jayhawks, 64-56  in Thursday night's nonconference game before 1,356  at Walton Arena.
Arkansas overcame Kansas leads in both halves, surpassing the Jayhawks  33-24 at intermission but twice trailing KU by one in the second half before Jhasmin Bowen's layup put Arkansas up, 46-45 with 7:15 left and never trailing again.

Lady Hornets execute in win

CONWAY – After a tough loss in the first round of the John Stanton Wampus Cat Invitational, the Bryant Lady Hornets responded with a 49-39 win over the Alma Airedalettes in a consolation game on Thursday at Buzz Bolding Arena. Bryant lost to Camden Fairview 53-42 in the first round where the Lady Hornets lacked execution, both offensively and in the rebounding department (Bryant was out rebounded 18-7 in the second half).

W. Memphis a devil on the boards in win over Benton

CONWAY - After starting the season 5-0, the Benton Lady Panthers have dropped their last two contests, losing their last 43-27 to the West Memphis Lady Blue Devils on Thursday in a consolation game of the John Stanton Wampus Cat Invitational. Benton lost 57-36 to North Little Rock in the first round on Monday.
“We got outworked on the boards,” Benton Coach Jerry Chumley said. “We worked on that and made an emphasis the last two days, but for whatever reason we didn’t stick them. We did at times, but a team like that you have to do it every time or they’re going to eat you up.”

GLEN ROSE - Every football team, from high school to the pros, has the same goal in mind at the beginning of any season: make the playoffs and win a championship. Though Saline County is far from the NFL, there is one team in the area that has not strayed away from that preseason mindset.

Santa to visit number of spots throughout the county

Santa Claus will be visiting the Saline County Courthouse gazebo Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 6 p.m., until Christmas.
Santa Claus can also be seen at the Shannon Hills Christmas parade Saturday.
In addition, Salem United Methodist Church will host Breakfast with Santa on Saturday.
Another Breakfast with Santa is scheduled at 9 a.m. Sunday at the Saline County Moose Lodge.
Photo sessions with Santa and the Chick-fil-A cows will be available Tuesday, Dec. 11 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Radio personalities to kick off Toy Trooper drive Friday in Bryant

The 13th annual Toy Trooper, a toy donation drive for children in Saline County, will kick off this weekend with visits from Little Rock radio broadcasters.
The 103.7 The Buzz Show With No Name hosts Tommy Smith, David Bazzel, RJ Hawk and guests will broadcast live from the Bryant Walmart parking lot from 6 to 10 a.m. Friday to kick off the event. Ugly Ed Johnson of KHITS 96.5 also will broadcast live from the Bryant Walmart parking lot from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday.

Project to widen Ark. 5 still in conceptual stage

The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department met with Bryant residents Tuesday evening at First Pentecostal Church regarding plans for widening Arkansas 5 from Benton to Little Rock.
Highway Department officials say the changes are necessary to accommodate continuing growth in the communities and increasing traffic congestion. The department estimates 15,000 vehicles travel this stretch of highway per day and projects this number will double by 2035.

WOO, PIG!: UA introduces new head coach

FAYETTEVILLE - From slopping hogs in Illinois, Bret Bielema now coaches Hogs in Arkansas.
The now former Wisconsin Badgers football coach and native of Prophetstown, Ill., was officially introduced at a Wednesday press conference by University of Arkansas Athletic Director Jeff Long as the Razorbacks head football coach.
“I grew up, ironically, on a pig farm,” Bielema said before leading boosters and UA brass in calling the Hogs. “That was my first public Pig-Sooie. From the ages 4 to 18 when I called them, my only partners were pigs. There is a little more pressure there.”

Miners win in double overtime

BISMARCK – The Bauxite Miners outlasted the Bismarck Lions in a double-overtime thriller on Tuesday night, escaping with a heart-pounding 57-53 road victory.
Sophomore Ben Madison paced the Miners offensively finishing the night with 27 points, nine rebounds and Hunter Holder chipped in 13 points, three rebounds and three assists.

Defense does it for 7-0 Panthers

CABOT – The Benton Panthers have a 4:30 p.m. Saturday date in the Cabot Pre-Holiday tournament final after defeating the Hot Springs Lakeside Rams 52-42 in the semifinal round on Wednesday night in Cabot. The Panthers are looking to win their second consecutive tournament in less than a week as they won the Searcy Bank Classic this past Saturday.
It was a low-scoring affair in the first half as the Panthers committed a season-high 17 turnovers against the Rams, but Benton played solid defense in holding an 18-13 lead at the half.
