Sarah Ellen Den Evans

November 5, 2012

Sarah Ellen Dean Eaves, a resident of Dothan, Ala., went to be with the Lord on Monday, Oct. 29. She was 92.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert M. Eaves; her son, Bill Kyser; and a grandson, Dwight Douglas Dimorier.
She is survived by her daughters, Geraldine Scribner and husband Harry of Benton, and Sue Thornton and husband, Roy Mac of Cottonwood, Ala; eight grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Crystal Marie Taylor

Crystal Marie Taylor, 53, of Benton passed away Monday, Oct. 22. She was born Dec. 2, 1958, in Little Rock to Sammy and Virginia Butler.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, Michael Moody and Michael Taylor, and her father, Sammy Butler.
Crystal is survived by her mother, Virginia Butler; her children, Megan Moody and husband Will, Matthew Moody, Kimberly Taylor, and Michaela Taylor. She is also survived by her siblings, Terrie Threlkeld and Clint Butler and husband, Robin; her granddaughter, Madison Moody; and numerous nieces and nephews.

'Angels' theme of county Christmas parade

Lisa Baldwin, coordinator of the Saline County Christmas Parade, said the theme of the 2012 event is "simple but glorious": That theme is "Angels."
The annual event is scheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, iin Downtown Benton.
Group organizers are hoping that many of the entries will capture "a bright and heavenly theme," Baldwin said.
Individuals and organizations wishing to participate in the parade may pick up registration forms at the Benton Area Chamber of Commerce, Books and Baubles and Paradise Pets, all located in Downtown Benton.

Colorado officers share experience with legalization of medical marijuana

In addition to the presidential election, arguably the most discussed topic for voters concerns Issue 5, which would legalize marijuana in Arkansas for medicinal purposes.
While the support group — Arkansans for Compassionate Care — is asking voters to have "compassion" and agree that marijuana will help people with serious illnesses, there are many state leaders who say there is more to Issue 5 than what voters realize.

Cardinals win, but miss playoffs

The Harmony Grove Cardinals finished off the regular season in style when they pulled out their third shutout of the season on the road at Horatio with a 27-0 domination of the Lions on Thursday night in 5-3A conference action.
"We played well on both sides of the ball and the kicking game," Assistant Coach Richard Moore said. "Good effort."
Harmony Grove also shut out Poyen 17-0 in Week 1 and Bismarck 27-0 in Week 5.

Voters still casting ballots as early voting nears end

Nearly 18,000 ballots have been cast from early voters in the Nov. 6 general election, according to tallies from the Saline County Clerk's Office.
The exact total thus far is 17,952, which included 1,826 ballots on Wednesday.
Broken down by specific sites, that number included 941 in Benton, 664 in Bryant and 221 in the Lonsdale area.

Benton woman arrested on 23 counts of animal cruelty

November 3, 2012

A Benton woman was arrested on Friday for 23 counts of animal cruelty, authorities said.
As of press time, 48-year-old Dorothy Rhonda Braithwaite remains in the Saline County jail with a $2,500 sheriff's bond. She is expected to appear in Benton District Court on Nov. 13.
Lt. Kevin Russell, public information officer for the Benton Police Department, said there is no indication that Braithwaite was selling the animals or part of an illegal "puppy mill." He said authorities do not anticipate any more arrests; however, the investigation is continuing.

Reedy Edward Harris

Reedy Edward Harris, 100, of Bauxite died Thursday, Oct. 25. He was born Feb. 12, 1912 in Center Ridge.
Mr. Harris was a retired millwright and a member of the Church of God.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James Franklin Harris and Josephine Brinkley Harris; his wife, Claudia Harris; a son, Edward Leon Harris; three brothers, Arthur, Glen and Harold Harris.

Scottie Sue (Noel) Stevens

Scottie Sue (Noel) Stevens,, 77, of Benton went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 30, at Saline Memorial Hospice House in Bryant.
She was born Nov. 26, 1934. in Halliday to the late Purvis Noel and Marie (Hampton) Noel.
She was baptized in 1948 at New Liberty Baptist Church in Greene County, in a pond in Marmaduke and has been an active member of First Baptist Church of Benton since March of 1957.  Mrs. Stevens retired as business manager for the Benton School District.

Peggy Ruth Wilkins

Peggy Ruth Wilkins, 80, of Alexander passed away on October 28, with her family by her side.  She was born on July 24, 1932 to the late, Roy C. and Mary Alice Jewell in Strong.  Peggy was a dedicated member for 36 years at Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Otter Creek.  She enjoyed spending time with her family and researching her family genealogy. 
She is preceded in death by her parents; her son, Jerrell Wilkins Jr.; her daughter, Mary Carol Lariveria; her brother, Roy and her sister, Nell.
