Thomas Harold Penn, 77, of Benton, passed away Friday, December 16, 2011.Â
He was born January 8, 1934.Â
Mr. Penn was a U.S. Army Veteran and retired from the Benton Service Center.Â
He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Lois Penn; brother, William Penn; sister, Mary Lois Brooks and a son-in-law, Brian Wake.
Jimmy Dale “KO” Tarvin, 76, of Lonsdale passed away Thursday, Dec. 15.
He was born Feb. 18, 1935, in Lonsdale to the late Louis and Valeria Tarvin. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved grandparents, George and Octavia Steely of Lonsdale.
Jimmy served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean and Vietnam wars. He retired in 1974 after 22 years of service.
Susie Everett has maintained a love and respect for Ouachita Baptist University since she was a student there in the mid-1970s.
Though she obtained her nursing degree from University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences, she earned her basic college credits during her two and a half years at OBU and now she's helping the school in an advisory capacity.
Everett, who spreads her talents and leadership among many area groups and agencies, is one of the four newest members of the OBU Board of Trustees.

An orange safety vest and a friendly wave is all most people know of "The Can Man." He could be seen nearly every day along the roadside on the southwest part of Benton in search of aluminum. His wave became a regular part of his daily routine for commuters merging onto I-30 near the 114 exit. However, the Can Man has been conspicuous in his absence over the last few months.
The Saline Courier caught up with this familiar face recently and here is his story.
His name is Dotsey Neal. He is 75-years-old. His brother, George Neal, is 78 and spoke for Dotsey during the interview.
The Bauxite Lady Miners improved to 2-0 in the 7-4A conference with a 49-44 victory over the Nashville Lady Scrappers on Friday night at Fred Dawson Gym in Bauxite.
“It was a good game,” Bauxite Coach Josh Harrison said. “It was closely contested. They jumped on us early.”
The Lady Miners (9-3, 2-0) scored the first two baskets of the game, but the Lady Scrappers ended up taking a 13-6 lead after the first quarter.
Bauxite picked up the defense to take a 20-17 halftime lead.

The majority of tax collections from the city's 1.5 percent Advertising and Promotion Commission tax in 2012 will be dedicated toward construction of an events center in Benton.
On Thursday night the A&P Commission made that decision as part of the process of finalizing its 2012 operating budget.
The commission voted to dedicate 96.5 percent of revenue from the A&P tax toward construction of the events center with the remaining 3.5 percent to be allocated for administrative costs.
The Bryant Hornets defeated their rival Benton Panthers 48-39 on Nov. 22 earlier this season at Benton arena. The Hornets’ win was the first over the Panthers since 2005, but tonight’s Saline County Shootout in Bryant may have a different result than the first meeting.
The Panthers (7-2) were without junior guards Quin Allen and Thaddeus Caffery due to injury in the first game. Since their return, the Panthers have gone 6-1, losing to a very good Cabot Panthers team, and Caffery has led the team in scoring.

Coming into the 2011 high school basketball season, it was unclear as to how both Harmony Grove teams would perform. The senior girls came in with a ton of senior talent from Morgan Ramsey, Macy Coffee and Torie Simmons. For the boys, they did not look near as good on paper. With fair guard play but lacking size, head coach Richard Moore was not sure exactly how the year would play out.
Benton native Wes Gardner played eight seasons in the major leagues — from 1984 to 1991 with the New York Mets, Boston Red Sox, San Diego Padres and Kansas City Royals. Drafted in the 22nd round out of the University of Central Arkansas, Gardner was in the same 1982 Mets' draft class with the likes of Dwight Gooden, Roger McDowell and Rafael Palmeiro.
