Jim Hunter, 80, of Benton, went to be with the Lord, Monday, August 8. He was born August 14, 1930 in Porum, Oklahoma. Mr. Hunter was retired from the U.S. Air Force and of the Baptist faith. He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Cora Hunter; two brothers Lloyd O. and Glen C. Hunter and a sister, Vera Lee Shell

He is survived by his wife, Tommie Hunter; daughter, Gina Mitchell-Hurley; granddaughter, Lisa Wright; great-grandson, Jacob Beck; two nieces and a nephew.

Thelma Louise Ritchey Crowson, 70, of Benton, passed away Tuesday, August 9. She was born October 23, 1940 in Benton, to the late Wyatt A. and Myrtle E. Ritchey. Mrs. Crowson was a homemaker and a member of New Hope United Methodist Church.Â

She is survived by her husband, Ray M. Crowson of Benton; son, Michael Ray Crowson of Conway; three daughters, Mamie Louise Crowson of Little Rock, Theresa Ann Crowson of North Little Rock and Helen Whitson of Benton; sister, Doris E. Ritchey of Benton and a granddaughter, Kristen Michelle Whitson of Benton.

Walton Douglas Ramsey, 64, of Little Rock, died Tuesday August 2. He was born February 7, 1947 in Little Rock. Mr. Ramsey was an Interior Designer and a US Air Force Veteran. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ohlas and Sarah Pauline Ramsey.

He is survived by his son, Douglas Nelson Ramsey and wife Barbara of Texarkana; daughter, Sarah L. Bradford and husband Wade of Conway; brother, Tommy Ramsey, Tull and four grandchildren.

Services will be 12 a.m., Friday, August 12, at Arkansas Veteran Cemetery in North Little Rock.

Alvin Leslie Anderson, 62, of Benton, passed away August 6. He was born December 15, 1948 in Sour Lake, Texas, to James and Julia Anderson. He was preceded in death by his father, James Anderson, brothers, Delbert and Carl Anderson, and sister, Faye Ashworth.

She is survived by her mother, Julia Anderson of Benton, and one daughter, Angela Pearson and husband, John of Kansas, two brothers, Robert Anderson of South Carolina, James Anderson of Louisiana, and sister, Virginia Hardin of North Little Rock and two grandchildren.

Shirley (White) Browning, 71, of Benton, went to be with her Lord and Savior, Sunday, August 7. She was born to the late Louie and Altha Mae (Deaver) White on December 3, 1939 in Conway. Shirley was preceded in death by a brother, Wendell White, of Conway.
Faye Robbins, 75, of Hot Springs, Arkansas passed away Sunday, August 7. She was born June 21, 1936 in Mena, Arkansas to Jim Bean and Mary Sleigh Bean.

She was a long time member of Walnut Valley Church and was a nurse in the Hot Springs area for 25 years. Faye was a hard worker from the garden to the log woods and loved animals. Her grandson, Drew, was the highlight of her life.

Faye was predeceased by her parents; sister, Wilma Shores; and brothers, Elmo Bean and Don Bean.
August 10th
Heidi Cox, the new Benton softball coach, will be introduced to the public Thursday night at 8 p.m. in the Benton High School Cafeteria.
“I thought she has a proven background not only as a player at the collegiate level, but the 6A Level and the 6A South Conference,” Benton athletic director Steve Quinn said. “She is a quality person with a good family and a good work ethic,” Quinn. “I felt like she will be a good asset to the community and school district.”
Cox is a graduated of Arkansas High School in Texarkana.

You never hear a father tell his son “Strive for second” or “Do everything you can to finish second.” The same should be applied to Major League Baseball. But it seems every year once a team realizes it can’t win a division, it aims for the wild card position.
Why wouldn’t they? Winning the wild card is just as good as winning the division.
There is penalty or drawback of winning the wild card. If a team wins the wild card, they have just as good of a chance to win the World Series as a team that wins their division.
August 8th
In the first-ever all Saline County regional, the Benton 9-year-olds defeated Bryant in the Cal Ripken Southwest Regional with a score of 4-0 in the final.
Benton’s Peyton Pallette took control of the game early and finished with a complete game one-hit shutout over Bryant, who reached the tournament finals after defeating Little Rock Junior Deputy 6-3.
“They had their ace going. It was a great game,” Bryant coach Clint Hilson said.
“We were really impressed with him and just couldn’t hit him.
Bryant’s only hit came in the fifth inning with a hit up a middle by Trey McKim.
Roy Lional Leland Jr. 86 of Alexander, formerly of Lonoke, passed away on Aug. 5, 2011.
Roy was born May 30, 1925, to the late LeRoy and Vivian Leland in Los Angeles, Calif. He was a member of First Assembly of God in Benton.Â
Mr. Leland was a true Christian man and loved sharing the gospel with others. He taught Sunday School at Zimmerman’s Nursing Home for more than 38 years.
Roy was a wonderful father, grandfather and friend.
