Man arrested, charged with harming children

Saline County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from several other agencies, arrested a man for allegedly using a false identity to contact young children.

Douglas E. Callaway, 47, of Shannon Hills allegedly used a false identity, Billy Thompson, to contact young children on social media sites, said Amanda Best, administrative assistant for the Saline County Sheriff.

Anyone with information about more possible victims in connection with this case should contact Detective R. Schwin at 501-303-5608.

UPDATE: Haskell bear rescued, released in wild

The bear that was found in a tree in Haskell on Thursday was tranquilized and rescued by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission. Following the rescue, Jake Whisenhunt, wildlife biologist, released the 275-pound bear into the Ouachita National Forest. For full details on event, grab an issue of today's Saline Courier.

New administrators to district honored at reception Monday

Benton School District officials welcomed three new administrators to the district on Monday night.

Honored at a reception preceding a school board meeting were Randy McFarlin, Michael Armstrong and Mark McDougal.

McFarlin is the district's new athletic director, succeeding Steve Quinn, who recently resigned from to become principal of Benton Middle School in the coming school term.
