Hornets cruise, ladies lose

BRYANT – The Bryant Lady Hornets fell to the Van Buren Lady Pointers 58-54 on Tuesday night in 7A/6A Central conference action in Bryant.
“Van Buren is a good team,” Bryant Coach Brad Matthews said. “They were well-prepared. They did stuff to us defensively that we haven’t seen all year.”

“We never really got into a flow offensively, but our kids continued to compete. We didn’t play very well, but such is life in the 7A Central and we got beat. They have four or five kids that they can put on the floor that can score.”

Three Hornets sign to play football

BRYANT – Three Bryant football players signed college letters of intent Wednesday on National Signing Day, but delayed their party until Friday.
“These guys are smart,” Bryant coach Paul Calley said. “They came to me and asked if they could have their party on Friday, so all of the media would come out.”

Receiver/defensive back Dillion Winfrey signed with Central Arkansas, linebacker Marshall Everett inked with Arkansas-Monticello and running back Karon Dismuke signed with Southern Arkansas.

Final 4 set to interview for Benton district superintendent

The four finalists for superintendent of the Benton School District are scheduled for interviews with the school board Monday, Feb. 13.
If the board can meet its optimum goal, a decision on the district's chief administrator could be made Monday night, according to Jeff Morrow, board president.
Morrow said the interviews are to be held in the recently renovated high school library facility that now is serving as a district professional development center.
The interviews will begin at 2 p.m. and will take place every two hours, Morrow said.

It was a cold, rainy night on Jan. 24 when a 21-year-old man parked his vehicle on top of Crystal Lake Road, headlights off and engine revving. About 9 p.m., the young man made a decision that would affect more people than he could have known at that moment.
The speed was unknown, the reasons are still today unknown, and unknown to him at that moment was that an angel of mercy was about to bestow upon what he believed would be the last moments of life. He pushed down the accelerator, raced down hill, turned the wheel and ramped the vehicle into Crystal Lake.

Melody Ann Traylor Ruff

Melody Ann Traylor Ruff, 56, of Benton was born June 21, 1955 in Little Rock, the daughter of the late Robert and Dorothy Goins Traylor. Melody passed from this life to be with her heavenly father on Jan. 31. Mrs. Ruff was a member of Faith Rebekah Lodge #59 and served as past Noble Grande. Melody was also a past President of Rebekah Assembly of Arkansas and a member of Ridge Crest Baptist Church.

Margie M. Daniels

Margie M. Daniels, 87, of Bryant, passed away Feb. 5.  She was born November 22, 1924 in Norphlet, to the late Russell and Helen Breaux Robin.  Margie was of the Catholic faith.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Horace Minor Daniels, daughters, Linda and Teresa Daniels, two brothers and one sister.
Survivors, brother, Henry Robin Sr. and wife, Jeannette of Homer, Louisiana, sister, Jo Ann Williams and husband, Jerry of Homer, Louisiana, and very special friends, Cindy Osburn and husband, Ron of Benton.

Theda N. Tucker

Theda N. Tucker, 89, of Traskwood, passed away Feb. 5. She was born April 30, 1922 in Traskwood to the late William Dewey and Annie Lee Tull Westbrook.  Theda was a member of the Traskwood United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, James Tucker, brothers, Verdis, Luke, Gene and Pete Hambrick, sisters, Mildred Cunningham and Angie Logan.

Wanda Louise Johnson

Wanda Louise Johnson, 69, of Mabelvale died Sunday, Feb. 5, in Little Rock. She was born July 16, 1942 in Back Gate. Wanda was a retired Private Care Nurse and a member of Alexander Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her father, Dee Hamilton, and a son, David H. Johnson III.

Barbara Ouzts Buie

Barbara Ouzts Buie of Prattsville, was born May 12, 1944 in Natchitoches, Louisiana, the daughter of the late E.C. Ouzts and Pearl Stewart Langley. She was a member of Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church in Prattsville. She loved to go to church, work in her yard and spend time with her family.
Mrs. Buie passed away Feb. 3, at UAMS at the age of 67.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Clayton Buie and a brother, Billy Ouzts.

Mark Steven Meeks

Mark Steven Meeks, age 54, of Bryant, passed away Friday, January 27, 2012 at his home.  He was born on December 28, 1957 in Camden, Arkansas.  Mr. Meeks was a project architect with Cromwell Architects in Little Rock for over 21 years, was of Christian faith, and loved his family and granddaughter.  He loved riding his Harley, was a member of the Unforgiven Militia Motorcycle Club, and was an exceptional artist. 
 
He was preceded in death by his mother, Doris (Garner) Meeks.
