State, feds file complaint over Arkansas oil spill

NORTH LITTLE ROCK — State and federal prosecutors in Arkansas are seeking civil penalties from ExxonMobil Pipeline Co. over the company's oil spill in a central Arkansas neighborhood.

Attorney General Dustin McDaniel and U.S. Attorney Chris Thyer announced Thursday that state and federal prosecutors filed a joint enforcement action against Exxon, alleging violations of environmental laws.

Exxon's Pegasus pipeline ruptured on March 29 in Mayflower, spilling an estimated 5,000 barrels of oil and causing the evacuation of more than 20 homes. Some nearby residents have sued the company.

Doug Williams

Doug Williams, 67, of Bauxite passed away Wednesday, June 12, 2013.  He was born Nov. 6, 1945, in Helena.
Mr. Williams was a U.S. Army veteran and retired from the Arkansas State Police. He served 27 years and 7 months. Doug was Commander of the Crimes Against Children Division upon retirement. He ends a 35 year career in law enforcement, including more than three years with the Little Rock Police Department and four years with the United States Secret Service-Executive Protective Service. Doug was currently employed at the Department of Human Services' Division of Child Care.

James D. Berry

James D. Berry, 63, of Benton went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on June 11, 2013. Jim was born Nov. 4, 1949, to J.D. Berry and Lucille Bednark Berry in Bauxite.
A graduate of Bauxite High School, Jim served in the U.S. Army and retired from the Benton Police Department.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Phillip Berry.

Patricia Faye Rickford

Patricia Faye Rickford, 66, of Benton, passed away Tuesday, June 11, 2013.  She was born April 27, 1947, in Benton. Mrs. Rickford was a member of Old Union Baptist Church. 
She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Dulsie Howard; her husband of 45 years, Clifford Rickford; two brothers, J.W. and Ronnie Howard and a sister, Mary Young.

Jearldine 'Jerri' Janice Burge

Jearldine "Jerri" Janice Burge, 81, "our Mimmie," went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, June 9, 2013.
She was born in Bonnerdale on March 17, 1932. She resided in Bryant and formerly Hot Springs. She was a devout Christian and was a member of the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Benton. She was a loving mother, grandmother and friend to many.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jim; and her parents, Marlow and Gertrude Evans.

Linda Sue Jeffcoat

Linda Sue Jeffcoat, 67, of Benton went to be with her Lord on June 9, 2013, with her family by her side. She loved spending time with her children, family and especially her grandbabies.
Linda was preceded in death by her parents, Pete and Pearl Balding; and two brothers, David and Wayne Balding.

Imogene DuVall White

Imogene DuVall White, 86, passed away on June 10, 2013, at Heartland Rehabilitation and Care Facility in Benton.
She was born Jan. 22, 1927, in Grant County to the late E.H. and Ida DuVall. Mrs. White was strong in her faith and worked many years both as a volunteer and an employee at First United Methodist Church in Benton.

City of Bryant: BONAFIDE offers residents opportunity to better the community

The Bryant Organized Neighborhood Association for Improving Development and Environment is free group in Bryant, with participation in events that include Keep Bryant Beautiful Cleanup Days, trail building, and landscaping and workshops on walkability of the city and connectivity of city streets.
Anyone interested in participating may contact the mayor's assistant, Brett Roberts, at broberts@cityofbryant.com. Those who are interested must include contact information in the email, including their name and street address, according to Roberts.

Roger Standridge Sr.

On Saturday, June 8, 2013, Roger "Bigun" Standridge Sr. passed into his heavenly home after surgery complications at UAMS.
He was born Aug. 8, 1949, in Russellville. He was the youngest of three boys.
Roger graduated with a bachelor's degree in computer drafting from Southern Tech University. 
In 1970 he married Christene Johnson of Bastrop, La. He worked various places in his lifetime with his last employment of eight years being at Alumacraft in Arkadelphia.

Tool drive for Habitat set for Saturday

Habitat for Humanity in Saline County is sponsoring a tool drive of new and gently used tools on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Lowe's in Bryant.
Tools garnered will be used at the construction site or sold at the Habitat ReStore. All proceeds will go to the 2014 youth build.
