Benton recipient of preservation program grant

Gov. Mike Beebe announced that the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program, an agency of the Department of Arkansas Heritage, has awarded $2,043,454 in grants for projects in 33 Arkansas counties – including Saline County – through its County Courthouse Restoration Subgrant, Historic Preservation Revitalization Grant, Certified Local Government Subgrant and Main Street Downtown Revitalization Grant programs.

The city of Benton received a $9,500 Certified Local Government grant for training and design guidelines.

It's official, Palace named to state's historic places

The State Review Board of the Arkansas Historic Preservation Program listed three Arkansas properties – including the Palace Theatre in Benton – on the Arkansas Register of Historic Places when it met Wednesday, Director Frances McSwain announced.

The board also nominated eight Arkansas properties for the National Register of Historic Places.
The 1919 Palace Theatre is located at 224 W. South St. in Benton. Extensive alterations to the building preclude its listing on the National Register.

Alderman recommends incorporating city of Bauxite

Alderman Karen Brooks stated during a workshop on Thursday night, "I recommend to incorporate the town of Bauxite." The city faces continued financial struggles and Brooks felt her suggestion was a viable option for the town located between Benton and Bryant.
