Statewide alcohol issue gains steam

Arkansas Secretary of State Mark Martin announced Wednesday that the Arkansas Alcoholic Beverage Amendment, a proposed constitutional amendment to allow retail alcohol sales statewide, has met the initial signature count requirement.

The amendment needed 78,133 signatures to appear on the November general election ballot.

The initial count performed by the Secretary of State's office reportedly exceeded 84,000. The office now will move to the signature verification process to determine how many of the signatures are those of registered voters.

Shirley Jean Reames Tilley

Shirley Jean Reames Tilley, 89, of Benton, a former longtime resident of El Dorado, passed away July 8, 2014, at the John R. Williamson Hospice House.
Born Feb. 10, 1925, in Clarksdale, Miss., she was the daughter of Fred Reames and Bertie Forrest Reams. 
A graduate of Union High School, Shirley worked for the First National Bank in El Dorado for 36 years.
Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Brough Barton Thompson Tilley; sisters, Mary Louise Reames and Marguerite Katherlyn Jackson; and brothers, Forrest Eugene Reames, Fred Oneal Reames and Rudolph Elliott Reames.

(Ret.) Sgt. Dewey E. Head

Retired Sgt. Dewey E. Head, 34, of Benton passed away Sunday, June 29, 2014.
Dewey was a retired sergeant of the U.S. Army who had been mobilized three times. He received many honors, including the Purple Heart, by the time he was honorably discharged in July of 2014 due to injuries he received in Iraq.
He was preceded in death by Joe and Gwen Roberson of Lonoke and his father-in-law, Joe D. Crouch of Benton.

Class 6A state tourney postponed on Friday. Will continue on Saturday.
