Miguel Cruz

Miguel Cruz, 34, of Benton, passed away Sept. 14, 2014. He was born May 21, 1980, in Chicago, Ill., to Mary Lou Barber and the late Jose Luis Cruz.
Miguel was an electronic whiz. He was a former newspaper carrier for The Arkansas Democrat and The Saline Courier.
Miguel is remembered for being outgoing and was well-loved by everyone who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his father; and his brother, Juan Cruz.

James Franklin 'Jimmy' Holiman

James Franklin “Jimmy” Holiman, 68, of Benton passed away Wednesday, Sept. 17, 2014, at Saline Memorial Hospice House in Bryant.
Jimmy was born Feb. 17, 1946, in Bauxite to the late Elbert and Lorene Steele Holiman.
He served in the U.S. Army for two years during the Korean Conflict. He had an extensive career in the public safety field, initially with the Benton Fire Department. He served as assistant chief for 11 years.

Convicted killer surrenders 3 months after escape

BOONEVILLE — A convicted killer who escaped an Arkansas prison turned himself into authorities Thursday after about three months on the run.

Timothy Buffington escaped June 21 from the Pine Bluff Unit after stealing a shotgun from a house on the prison grounds where he'd been performing janitorial work. He was found more than 150 miles away Thursday — in the same area where he was convicted of first-degree murder for the 1998 shooting death of his ex-wife, Rhonda Combs.
