Glenda Gail Finley Taylor

March 28, 2014

Glenda Gail Finley Taylor of Benton, was born on August 9, 1940 and passed away on March 27, 2014 at the age of 73.  She was the daughter of James Finley and Willie Lucy Finley.  She was a member of Cross Roads Missionary Baptist Church and retired from CoorsTek, Inc. 
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Ethel Finley Young and Bonnie Finley Beeler, and an infant brother, James Rex Finley.

Margaret Fay Fox

Margaret Fay Fox, 82, of Little Rock, formerly of Benton, passed away March 26, 2014 at Hickory Heights Nursing Home & Rehab in Little Rock.  She was born February 25, 1932 in Bono, IN to the late Everett H. and Bernice E. Howard Boyd.
Besides her parents, her husband, Howard T. Fox, one granddaughter, Christy Womack, and one sister, Eva Catlin also preceded her in death.

Rex Maynard

Rex Maynard, 77, of Benton, passed away March 27, 2014.  He was born Jan. 8, 1937, in Wayne, W. Va., to the late Golden and Zelda Maynard. 
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Virginia (Gin) Volpe Maynard; a son, Rex Maynard; a grandson, Nick Miller; other grandchildren, Jared, Julie and Jennifer Miller; a sister, Doris Krupka; and a brother, Donald Maynard.
He is survived by a daughter, Sheila Miller, and husband Willard of Benton; two sisters, Mickie Zubek and Iris Suchy of Ohio; two grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Janice Jane Thompson

Janice Jane Thompson, 58, of Benton went to be with her Lord on March 26, 2014.  She was born May 11, 1955, in Tulsa, Okla., to the late Robert Ervin and Pearl Christine Ausburn Westbrook.
Janice was a member of the Temple Missionary Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband of 36 years, Glenn Curtis Thompson; a son, Glenn Allen Thompson; a brother, Robert Chris Westbrook of Washington; a sister, Brenda Kay Westbrook of Texas; and a twin sister, Janet Jean Boozer of Bigelow.

Quincy Matthew “Matt” Long

Quincy Matthew “Matt” Long, 34 years, 10 months, and 17 days, of Benton, was born May 1, 1979, in Benton.
He entered into eternal rest on March 18, 2014, at Saline Memorial Hospital.
Matt attended school in Bauxite. His favorite hobbies were spending time with his wife, kids, family and friends. He also loved camping, riding his motorcycle and tattooing.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Elroy and Freda Long and Marshall and Inez Isenhower; and also an aunt, Carolyn Long.

Vickie Lynn Land

Our beloved mother, sister, daughter, aunt and friend, Vickie Lynn Land, age 61, of Benton, went home to her heavenly father this past Sunday, after a long progressive illness following Guillain-Barre syndrome and sarcoidosis.
She was saved, had made peace with the Lord and was eager to be united once more in eternal life with her father, Faber Thomas, and brother, Dickie Thomas. Vickie was a hard-working single mother who dedicated her life to providing for her children

Hornets handle Zebras

BRYANT – Junior pitcher Blaine Knight struck out the first four batters he faced and nine straight to start, to lead the Bryant Hornets to a 11-1 five-inning victory over the Pine Bluff Zebras in 7A/6A South action on Friday at Hornets Field.
Knight picked up the win giving up one run on one hit, walking two and striking out eight for the game.
The Hornets would strike first early as junior Drew Tipton hit a one-out double to left field and came around to score when third-place batter Chase Tucker singled up the middle for the 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.

NORTH LITTLE ROCK -- Friday was night full of defending champions and second-place finishers in North Little Rock. The first round of play slated the defending 3A champ Harmony Grove against 1A’s victor Taylor Lady Tigers. With two teams looking for a repeat this season, Harmony Grove got in the early shot, punching Taylor in the mouth to the tune of 9-0.
“We hit very well today,” Head Coach Sammi Massey said. “We played really well. Other than one error on defense it went pretty well.”

Panthers fall at Fair

LITTLE ROCK – After dropping a 5-2 decision to Bryant in the first 7A/6A South Conference game of the season, the Benton Panthers soccer team bounced back to defeat Vilonia 1-0, but fell once again on Friday on the road. With a 1-1 score at the end of regulation, the JA Fair War Eagles won a 5-4 shootout over Benton to put a tired Panthers team at 5-2 overall and 0-2 in the South.
The Panthers have played eight games in the past 11 days.

Miners make history, dominate field

JESSIEVILLE – The Bauxite Miners won their first-ever overall team track meet in the Senior High Lion Relays on Thursday in Jessieville. The Miners blistered the field scoring 129 points, outdistancing second-place Caddo Hills (80.5) by almost 50 points. The Lady Miners tied with Caddo Hills for third at the meet with 66 points, behind first-place Jessieville (125) and second-place Magnet Cove (81).
