Jade Ma, Davis Elementary student, recently earned the prestigious distinction as a winner in the national Noetic Learning Math Contest.
According to Donna Peters, math teacher and coach, the contest is an elementary math problem-solving contest held twice a year.
Peters said 12,630 young students, representing 649 teams across the country, participated in the spring contest.Â
Saline County residents showed their support for the Avilla Community Center by turning out for a recent fundraiser for the historic structure that once served as a schoolhouse for many residents of Saline County.
The building now serves as a polling site with its upkeep overseen by the Avilla Extension Homemakers Club, which sponsored the event.
According to Saline County Justice of the Peace Barbara Howell, the fundraiser was a "tremendous success," exceeding expectations by bringing in more than $3,000 that will help keep the facility in use for many years to come
Family members and others are remembering the late Ed Hollenbeck as a kind, compassionate man who cared about others and who led by example, rather than admonition.
Dr. Hollenbeck died Friday at Saline Memorial Hospice House, following a brief stay at Arkansas Heart Hospital. He had recently celebrated his 82nd birthday.
The retired minister had served numerous Cumberland Presbyterian and United Methodist congregations in Arkansas. His final pastorate was at the Cumberland Presbyterian Fellowship in Bryant, where he continued to be active as much as his health permitted.

Tall, skinny, and with a little more fragile appearance than normal, Coach Al Harrell set down in the office chair and opened up his heart.
With co-worker and friend Coach Jon Watson by his side, Harrell struggled at times to hold back the tears. After 52 years of living, the man that has dedicated his life to mentoring youth — both as a sports coach and administrator for the Bauxite School District — was told that his body, which began aching severely recently, is dying.

After two women told a Little Rock television news station that their children are in danger at the Bauxite Middle School, with one saying that her 13-year-old daughter was raped on campus, authorities are saying otherwise.
"We have been able to confirm through our investigation that there was not a rape (of the student) at the Bauxite Middle School," Lt. Mike Frost of the Saline County Sheriff's Office told The Saline Courier today.

With summer temperatures already here, there could be an abundance of residents in need of a fan to cool their home, particularly for the elderly.
Because of that, the Benton Utilities Share Program have stocked more than 270 fans that they are ready to distribute "free of charge." Applicants must be a customer of Benton Utilities and participating members of the Share Program, with an annual income not exceeding $25,000.

The 10th annual Picnic and Stumpin’ for Votes events will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thurs., May 3 on the lawn of the Saline County Courthouse.
A picnic-style lunch will be served, including hamburgers, hot dogs, potato chips, pasta salad, drinks and dessert.
Additionally, door prizes will be awarded and a silent auction with a number of items from which to bid will be included in the event.
It is also an opportunity to meet local candidates.
Tickets are $10 and can be purchased by calling Quinn Lausten at 315-1121 or the Saline County Judge's office at 303-5640.
The Bryant School District will host the third annual Dash for a Difference 5K Fun Run/Walk and Kid's 1 mile at 9 a.m. Sat., May 5 at Bryant Middle School.
Sponsored by Arkansas Bone and Joint, proceeds from this year's race will benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Bryant.
Boys and Girls Clubs nationwide have experienced a drastic reduction in federal funding.
"When they lost the $100,000 of federal TANF funds due to government cut backs earlier this year, we knew they needed the support of their community more than ever before," Jessica Bollen, race director, said.
It may have come a downpour but that did not deter hundreds of athletes, coaches, volunteers and spectators from showing up to support the Area 10 Special Olympic Day held at the Bryant High School football stadium April 20.
According to Ann Hudson, Area 10 director, this isn't the first time it has rained, but they are accustomed to being flexible.
"It likes to rain on our parade, but we are holding out. The athletes have stepped it up," Hudson said.
The Benton Police Department is requesting the help of the public to locate a 15-year-old boy that allegedly ran away from home 10 days ago.
Payton Stone is described as 5 feet 3 inches tall, 110 pounds with blue eyes and brown hair. He was last seen at 7 p.m. Saturday, April 21 leaving his home on foot.
Payton was last noticed wearing a white Holister “So Cal” shirt, kakhi shorts, purple and black color shoes, and a Black Sox baseball cap. Officers believe that Payton is traveling on foot.
