Everett named 2013 Top Dealership for third straight year

Being recognized as a national leader is becoming a habit at Everett Buick GMC.
For the third consecutive year, the family-owned business has been named the top GM dealership in the United States for 2012. More than 3,100 vehicles were purchased at Everett's in 2012, up from 2,665 in 2011.
"If someone would have told me six years ago this would happen three years straight, I wouldn't have believed them," said owner Dwight Everett.
"We could not have accomplished what we have here without the support of the community and the partnership we have with GM," co-owner Susie Everett added.

Homicide victim in Saline County identified

The Saline County Sheriff's Office has confirmed the identity of a dead body found off River Road on Sunday as 19-year-old Gregory Tyrone Pikes of Benton.
As of press time, no person(s) of interest have been named by authorities. The manner in which Pikes was killed was also not released as of press time.

Local boy collects food donations in lieu of presents

There are many things a boy could ask for on his eighth birthday.
Store shelves these days are packed with the newest bigger, better toys and gaming systems. Kids are tempted by commercials that feature toys and games that do amazing things – not to mention the appeal to ask their parents for the latest electronic equipment. The age that children request their own computer and cell phone is getting younger every year.

Cameron Terrell forgoes birthday gifts for others

"Everyone kept asking me what to get Cameron for his birthday. I told them I didn't know, but I would find out," said Lori Terrell about her son.
Cameron, a sixth-grader at Benton Middle School, had not been helpful with clues of any kind. "I really couldn't think of anything I wanted," said Cameron. "I thought I had too much stuff already."
Then, on the way to school one morning, Cameron made a decision. "I know what I want," he said to his mother. "I want a pair of shoes so I can give them to someone who needs them."

Local VFW promotes patriotism, honors students

Each fall the Veterans of Foreign Wars Raymond McGill Post 2256 and the Ladies Auxiliary of Benton provide an opportunity for Saline County students to express their views on patriotism and democracy and earn monetary awards through the Patriot’s Pen essay contest.
This year’s theme, "What Would I Tell Our Founding Fathers?," drew more than 220 contestants from local middle and junior high school students.

Bond and court date set for officer charged with manslaughter

A former Alexander police officer facing a charge of manslaughter was given a new court date and a $10,000 signature bond after appearing in Benton District Court on Friday.
It was revealed that 47-year-old Nancy Cummings believes an attorney from the Arkansas Municipal League may represent her in court. However, she said no arrangement has been made at this point.
It was also revealed that Cummings was taken into custody during a training session at the Black River Technical College Law Enforcement Academy in Pocahontas.
