NOTICE: Road closure in Bryant Tuesday

June 5, 2013

The portion of Boone Road from Tanglewood Street West to Woodland Park Road will be closed on Tuesday between the hours of 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The Bryant Street Department will be replacing culverts during this time.

Bryant firefighter on leave after arrest

Pulaski County sheriff's deputies arrested on Tuesday Jeremy Heavner, 38, in connection with a robbery that morning at Metropolitan Bank on Arch Street in Little Rock.
Heavner is a firefighter in Bryant.
Bryant Fire Chief J.P. Jordan said Heavner is on administrative leave for an indefinite amount of time. "We're just going to let the legal system run its course."
Jordan said, "We're just glad no one was hurt."
Heavner is being held at Pulaski County Detention Center.

Courier seeks public input on A Day in the Life of Saline County

The Saline Courier is planning a special section in June, to be written by you.
A Day In the Life is a unique addition to the Courier’s Sunday edition and will chronicle a typical June day in Saline County through the eyes of our readers. We have selected Friday, June 7, to essentially watch, learn, listen and chronicle the comings and goings of Saline County.

Annual Buddy Carter Rib Cook-Off set for Saturday

Saline County Moose Lodge 2567 will host its annual Buddy Carter Rib Cook-Off Saturday, June 8, at the lodge, located just off Interstate 30, 12 miles southwest of Benton.
Entry for up to a five-person team is $50. The contest is open to anyone. Trophies will be awarded to the top three teams.
The public is invited to attend, with trophies awarded at 4 p.m. and dinner at 5 p.m.
Pit passes cost $8 and will allow patrons to sample all the ribs from the various entries.
A bake sale and dessert contest also are part of the event.
Entry fee for the dessert contest is $15.

Gov. Beebe: Flags to fly at half-staff for sheriff

LITTLE ROCK — Gov. Mike Beebe is ordering Arkansas flags to be flown at half-staff to honor a sheriff who died while attempting a water rescue during flash flooding last week.
Beebe said Tuesday that flags will be flown at half-staff Wednesday to honor Scott County Sheriff Cody Carpenter of Waldron.
Carpenter died alongside Arkansas Game and Fish Wildlife Officer Joel Campora on Friday while trying to save two women from flash floods.
Carpenter was 41. He is survived by a wife and four children.
The governor says Arkansans owe Carpenter a debt of gratitude for his bravery and heroism.

Tip-A-Cop event set for Thursday at Colton's

Local law enforcement officers will wait tables for tips Thursday night at the sixth annual Tip-A-Cop event at Colton's Steakhouse and Grill in Benton.
Between the hours of 5 and 10 p.m., police officers from throughout Saline County will wait tables, and all tips will go to benefit Special Olympics.
