The National Weather Service in Little Rock has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for south central Saline County until 8:15 p.m.

From the Shannon Hills Public Works Manager, David Passmore:
The July 29 "Precautionary Boil Water Notice" is hereby rescinded following the repair, an adequate disinfectant level has been established throughout the distribution system and the satisfactory completion of the bacteriological survey shows that the water is safe to drink.

Benton, Bryant youth to join forces for benefit bike race

While it's common for competitions to take place pitting area school groups against each other — particularly for athletic events — youth organizations from three communities have decided to join together for a common cause.
Members of the Mayor's Youth Advisory Councils from the cities of Benton, Bryant and Haskell are joining forces for a bike race that will benefit The Care Center in Benton.
The race is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 14.

UPDATE: Pursuit ends with officer-involved shooting

A pursuit with Benton police this afternoon ended in an officer-involved shooting, where the suspect died at the scene.
About 3 p.m., detectives observed the suspect, identified as 29-year-old Clifford Jones, in the area of Gattin Road and Madison Village and attempted to perform a traffic stop.
Jones reportedly refused to pull over for officers, driving quickly on Gattin Road toward Alcoa Road and then onto Interstate 30.

BREAKING: Police chase results in I-30 eastbound being shut down

A chase between Benton police and a fleeing suspect has traffic backed up on Interstate 30 eastbound.
The chase originated on Benton Parkway.
More details will be released soon, according to Lt. Kevin Russell.

Pet calendar voting period concludes Friday

The final day to vote in The Saline Courier 2014 Pet Calendar Contest is Friday.
Votes are 25 cents each and can be entered at The Saline Courier office, 321 Market St. in Benton.
The top 12 pets will be featured in the calendar, which will be sold later this year.
Winners will be announced Thursday, Aug. 8 in the paper.
All proceeds benefit the Newspapers in Education program.

Ark. district arming more than 20 teachers, staff

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. (AP) — As Cheyne Dougan rounded the corner at Clarksville High School, he saw three students on the floor moaning and crying. In a split-second, two more ran out of a nearby classroom.

"He's got a gun," one of them shouted as Dougan approached with his pistol drawn. Inside, he found one student holding another at gunpoint. Dougan aimed and fired three rounds at the gunman.

NOTICE: Boil Order issued for Shannon Hills

July 29, 2013

A precautionary boil water notice has been issued for residents of the city of Shannon Hills living in the area located east of Vimy Ridge Road to Sardis Road affecting approximately 584 customers.
A water main break has occurred at Laddie Drive.
Therefore, as a precaution, all affected customers are advised that the water may be unsafe for human consumption and water used for drinking, cooking, making ice, brushing teeth or washing dishes be boiled briskly for one minute prior to use. As an alternative, bottled water may be used.

BREAKING: Bill Halter drops out of Governor's race

July 29, 2013

Former Lt. Gov. Bill Halter dropped out of the race for Arkansas governor Monday, saying he wanted to avoid a divisive primary with former U.S. Rep. Mike Ross for the Democratic nomination in 2014.

Halter, who entered the race in January, told supporters in an email that he was ending his bid for the state's top office. A spokesman for Halter said the former lieutenant governor would not be available for further comment.
