Civitan to host annual Hook-a-Heart Bass Fishing Tournament

The sixth annual Hook-a-Heart Bass Tournament presented by Everett Buick-GMC and benefiting Civitan Services will be Aug. 11 on the Arkansas River, with check-in and weigh-in at The North River Landing in North Little Rock.
To make sure the tournament is run professionally, Civitan Services has partnered with Mr. Bass of Arkansas pro/am series director, Ronnie Everett. Everett will serve as the tournament director.
The tournament is open to all amateur anglers 16 years and older and there should be two fishers per boat.

Pet calendar voting period concludes Friday

August 1, 2013

The final day to vote in The Saline Courier 2014 Pet Calendar Contest is Friday.
Votes are 25 cents each and can be entered at The Saline Courier office, 321 Market St. in Benton.
The top 12 pets will be featured in the calendar, which will be sold later this year.
Winners will be announced Thursday, Aug. 8 in the paper.
All proceeds benefit the Newspapers in Education program.

WASHINGTON — Is an outbreak of a nasty stomach bug over? Depends on who you ask.

Iowa officials say that almost 150 cyclospora infections in their state were linked to a bagged lettuce mix and the threat is over. Federal officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Food and Drug Administration aren't so sure, saying it is too early to say if the outbreak is over. There are almost 400 illnesses total in 15 states.

LITTLE ROCK — The chairman of the Arkansas Democratic Party on Wednesday announced he was stepping down after two and a half years at the helm as he considers a potential run for public office next year.

The state party announced that Will Bond would serve until Sept. 14, when the party's state committee elects a new chairman. Gov. Mike Beebe, a Democrat, announced he's backing Vincent Insalaco as Bond's replacement.
